Collar Question Hello-I was just wondering if anyone uses collars with their Yorkies? I have a boy who is 4 1/2 lbs and I was looking to get him a Coach collar but I don't know if leather is too heavy for his neck. He is microchipped but I am still not comfortable with him not having a visual collar in case he gets lost. I could go with a lighter material but I wanted him to be fashionable (if possible!). Has anybody bought a Coach collar for their pups? Thanks! |
Yorkies have super fragile trachea's and shoudlnt' wear collars. i guess it would be ok if it was just for looks but if you are going to take him for a walk he should have a harness on |
I agree, the collar for looks and the harness for walking. The Coach collar should be fine to wear just for looks.:) Welcome to YT!! Great to have you join us!! |
Thank you for your welcome! I've been reading ALOT here in the past few months but finally posted tonight! This site is incredible and so helpful! Also...I use a harness for Nicky..no collars for walks! |
Sorry to break this to ya, but Coach collars don't come small enough for the little ones, unless your 4lb yorkie has a super fat neck. :( I know, I know, so sad. I have resorted to all sorts of collars by Fox & Hound. Probably a good thing they don't come small enough as I am sure it's saved me lots of money! |
Lacy normally wears a collar and her tag every day. It's only for decoration and ID. I always walk her on a harness and leash |
I have also read and been told no collar for yorkie well unless it is for decoration only but i am to chicken to even do that |
Jeter has a harness for walking, but he wares his collar with bell and tags also, we just never put his leash to it. |

I do not use a collar at all but my dtr has one on her Yorkie. It is just for show though. I don't like collars unless they are the break away ones for any dog actually. |
Thank you everyone for your responses! I will skip the collar completely!!! |
Good idea to skip the collar. I had two bad experiences with collars so we go collar free. One got caught on something and luckily she didn't choke to death and the other slipped it over her bottom jaw and got it in her mouth and she was flopping all over the place. Luckily I was there both times to catch it in time but NO more collars for us. |
Remi has a nylon collar used only for ID. He has a a reflector harness and leash for our walks. |
I agree with you all. Walk a Yorkie with a harness. |
