How old before going to Groomers? Hi! Mariah will be 10 wks old tomorrow. How old should a Yorkie be before taking them to the Groomers and how often should they go? We also have a bischon but I can't remember when we started sending her. She needs to be done often - especially her "private" parts. We drop Angel off in the morning and pick her up in the afternoon when she gets groomed. She's so well behaved when she goes. Mariah is so young and small...I can't imagine EVER leaving her there. I wonder if I could arrange to just stay there during the grooming when it's time? |
I started Nolee at 12 weeks. They sooner the better I was told. They can get familiar with the process. It was hard leaving him also. Just like dropping a baby at daycare! I am very happy with our groomer and he looks great. I take him once a month sometimes a little longer. |
With her so young you could take her and have her nails cute and ears done. And let her get use to the groomers. Most groomers want the dog to have the boretella shot before taking them, not sure about in your area. I would start and let her get use to it and then take her in for a total groom. Mine only stay a few hours and I pick them up. Usually the first in and out. I only got once a month or longer as I do most of mine at home. |
Your puppy needs to have had all vaccinations before going to the groomer or being boarded...usually 16 weeks. Your dog should have had at least three rounds of vaccinations, including parvo & distemper. Most groomers will require rabies as well before they will groom. I also recommend a Bordetella vaccine. How often you groom her will depend on how fast her hair grows and how short you want to keep it. I don't cut Lacy's hair other than to trim up her ears, feet, and sanitary areas. I usually do this once a month. |
I agree completely that the puppy should have all of its shots before going to the groomer. My mom and dad yorkies go to the groomer about every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the time of year. Their baby is 14 weeks and will not be going to the groomer until she has her last round of shots, including the bordetella (Kennel Cough) which won't be for another 3 weeks. My groomers have a beautiful little shop and it is very clean, but they cannot know what the dogs will bring in so I think it is very important that they have the bordetella, which isn't really a shot, but given up their nose. Better safe than sorry, Kennel Cough can be very dangerous and hard to get rid of especially in our little guys. |
Unless you are planning on doing her nails, she will need to get that done probably now. I have always started them with my groomer when I got them, but she never had any other pets at her shop when I would take them as babies. It was always a special get-acquainted session so they wouldn't be scared and would be used to it. I always acquaint them with the blow dryer. I was just careful not to get it too hot for them.:) |

My vet says the shot is less risky also... I have never left my baby at the groomers. Good thing too, I saw how he was treated through the pet smart window and have never gone back! It took 3 poeple to hold down a 3 pound dog!!! He had to have his nails trimmed and the hair around his eyes trimmed. He was scared to death poor baby. After that I went to a kind groomer who let me stay and help hold him. I watched how she did things and decided to groom myself. I have ever since except the nails. My vet now trims them. This groomer at pet smart that I did like told me to NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG AT THE GROOMERS...and she was a groomer. She said she has seen MANY BABIES HIT THE FLOOR AND THE OWNER NEVER GETS TOLD!!! She didn't always work at a pet smart, so this is coming from a groomer that is in her 40's and has been around a bit. |

They should have all shots first, including Bordatella. Let your vet know you want to get baby to the groomer sooner rather than later so your vet can work with you on a vaccine schedule and give you the all clear when the time is right. In the meantime, you can do baths and brushing etc. at home. |

Eighteen weeks is ideal. They usually get the last shots at 16 weeks and then you should wait an additional two weeks for full immunity. |
I also waited until Madeleine had all her shots. She was about 5 months old when she first got groomed. |
Thanks I really appreciate the advice! Thank you all so much! |
Duchess just turned 14 weeks and had her 1st groomers appt. I took her along with my other 2 girls. She is up to date on her shots but my groomer also said she'd do her as soon as we got there so I could take her with me when I left..I kept it very simple and basic for her 1st time.. |
