This is our first time having babies Does anyone have any do's and don'ts.......must and must nots or just any suggestions. I know that I break the membrain and cut the umbilical cord and then pinch it with baby powder and clean the baby off and make sure it is breathing then put on it's mom. Have I missed anything....or am I all wrong. I am so nervous and excited at the same time. |
you might post this in the breeders section so the pros can answer |
Thanks, I am new to this so I am still learning. |
Well, if you're lucky, your first time Mommy will let her instincts take over and she will do all the work for you. I just had my first litter of four born on Halloween. The Mommy cut the cord, opened the sacks, and had them all cleaned and nursing. All I really had to do was weigh them, and put their collars on them (so we could tell who was who for weight gain purposes). I would recommend letting the mom eat only one placenta, as it has good nutrients in it for her, but if she eats more than one, she will most likely get diarrhea. I know how you're feeling. I was both so excited and so nervous at the same time. Good luck to you!! |
I only bred one time years ago, I didn't have to do anything, the mother did it all |
I am excited for you good luck. |
I wouldn't let the mother do everything during delivery. What if she chews the cord too close or something? Then the puppy will die... |
First thing you do is break the sack. Second thing you need to do is suction out the pup's nose and mouth and get it breathing. Then once the pup is breathing well, then you tie the cord for a couple minutes and cut it. You can let mom eat one or two placentas but I wouldn't let her eat any more or she may get diarehea. I will always do everything for the mom's, it is too risky not to. I have heard of the mom's chewing the cord to short and endangering the pup's life. Destiny would have if I had not cut it myself. Here is a good site you may want to look over, it has a ton of information on the whole birthing process and the do's and don'ts. http://www.debbiejensen.com Also make sure you count all the placentas, this is very important. Because if you are missing a placenta it may still be in the mother and you will need to take her to the vet to get an oxytocin (sp?) shot to clean her out. Good luck. Can't wait to see the babies!! |
