What's The Best Age I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on age as far as getting a puppy? I mean, what age should a yorkie pup be when purchased? I've seen people selling then at 6 weeks old, which to me is just CRAZY, but then again, I'm not a breeder and have never owned a yorkie prior to Maggy, so I'm really clueless about this. I know when we got one of our boxer boys, I waited till he was 11 weeks old to bring him home, but that's a boxer pup, maybe yorkies are different. Is 8 or 9 weeks to young to take them away from the Momma? |
You will get lots of opinions but the general consesus amont reputable Yorkie breeders is 10-12 weeks (12 being best). |
Why do some breeders wait until 4 months before selling their puppies?:thumbdown |

Most pups shouldnt be allowed to go to their new homes until about 12 wks. This is for many reasons: ie: health, wing off mom, seperation anxiety, and the list can go on.. I'm sure a breeder from here would have more insite to the p's and the q's about why no go home till at least 12wks |
A toy breed should be at least 12 weeks before leaving the breeder..older if it is very tiny. In fact, the YTCA code of ethics states that yorkie breeders should not let puppies go before a minimum of 12 weeks. Before 12 weeks, hypoglycemia risks are greater. Also the puppies learn quite a bit of socialization & proper behavior from mom and siblings from 8-12 weeks, including bite inhibition. Puppies also don't start their vaccinations until 8 weeks (sometimes 6). They really need to have at least 2 vaccinations before leaving the breeder so they are partially protected to diseases. |

Thanks so much to everyone for all your replies to this question, I appreciate it very much. |
To tell you the truth, I like getting dogs that are 6 months... Like I got Roxy... because then you know about how big it is going to be with no surprises!!! lol. Roxy was 2.4lbs when I got her and now she's 2.7 so I knew pretty much she wasn't going to get too big. |
8 weeks is the bare minimum, anything less than that screams puppymill, backyard breeder, or broker. Reputable breeders may even keep a pup up to six months depending on the size and condition to make sure they are selling a healthy pup. |
I always liked getting mine early, I knew what to watch for, so when I got my first one at 2 days short of 7 weeks, I was cool with that..I got the last one at 11 weeks..I never had any problems with the first one I got, infact, she never had a biting issue nor any other problems.. |

we got martini as soon as she turned 3 mts old and to me that was perfect age to get her... |
My first yorkie was 4 months old before the breeders would let her go, they wouldn't let their dogs go until they weighed 2 lbs. |
