Angels eyes verses vitamin C????
 
For tear stains....

I asked my vet if angels eyes was safe to give, and he looked it over and decided that Vitamin C would probably work just as well!!! I haven't tried it yet but I might. He told me 100 Mil (Not buffered) a day. What do ya think???

I also just started distilled water for tear stains. How ong does that take to kick in? Any one know?:confused:

I started mine on distilled water 10 days ago and I have noticed Pixie, my one that tears and stains red is not tearing near as much. As for the staining I washed her a few days ago and so far very little staining. I won't know for a week or so if it's helped the staining a lot or a little.

I'm sure they are all different but I did the distilled water for 3 months and never saw a difference. I was so disappointed because I know others have has success with it. I started Angel Eyes and did see an improvement but my vet said it is a low level antibiotic and I'm not comfortable with that. I'd love to know more about the vit. c. I haven't heard about that.

I've never heard of using vitamin C for tear stains. But I'd love to hear more info on it and how it works

One thing I do know about Vit. C is that it isn't necessary to supplement in dogs and cats. Unlike people, who must get vitamin C. from their diet, dogs and cats synthesize their own Vitamin C.

I've read that in Dr. Pitcairn's book. Probably a stupid question but do you think the extra (maybe mega dose?) vit c would do anything with the tearing? I know how it works in humans (expensive pee and all that :p ) but I have no idea how dogs metabolize vitamins. Sugar tears like crazy and I'm not doing Angel Eyes so I'm pretty desperate.:p

I have no idea how it would help with tearing. I'd love to hear any info on it if it does help though. Vit. C is water soluble in dogs as well, so any excess should be excreted in the urine (just like people)

I bought angel eyes for a maltese I used to have, it never worked on her, also bought a couple other things that never worked..the only thing I found that worked was using some peroxide around the eye on a cotton ball, making sure you don't get in the eye...My sister uses the distilled water on her 5 dogs, she seems to think it helps, but, that is something else I had tried for quite a few mos. and I never saw a difference..

I don't like Angel Eyes because of the Tylan (antibiotic). It also falsely elevates ALT levels which I don't think is good in Yorkies because so many have livers problems and a raise in ALT would leave you wondering if it is from the Angel Eyes or liver disease.

I will talk to the vet more about this next at the appointment I have. I want to be really clear on dose and all. he called me to tell me and I jotted it down really quick. I'll see him again soon cause Sadie is due in a few weeks for Rabies shot. It would be so cool if this worked and was 100% safe! We will see!

I cut the hair near the eyes very short... I do this every 2-3 days... i also used to use 1/2 peroxcide 1/2 warm water to help deal with the stains... it helps but try not to get it in their eyes...It might sting. :(

I used straight peroxide around the malteses eyes, never diluted it with water. And I've never cut the hair around their eyes, if you do that once, you have to keep doing it..the groomer said if I was going to keep their hair pulled up, not to mess with it..so I dont'..:)

I hear ya...I have to keep Livi's eyes trimmed now because her groomer completely shaved them! Her tear stains used to just very barely show and now, if I don't keep her eyes trimmed, her stains are sooooooooo bad. :( Does the peroxide work?

Distilled water is water that has been purified by converting to steam and back to water. You can find it with all of the other bottled water.:)

Actually many have good luck with the tear stains improving when they give only distilled water for the dog to drink.

Do any of you feed a supplement like Missing Link or Nupro???

I ask, b/c I used to feed this. Both Roxy and TJ had terrible red tears. But once I stop that added supplement the RED stopped. They still tear but clear.

I don't use either. Gracie and Spike have normal eyes but poor little Sugar's eyes just run and run.

Well it's hard to say since his face is kind of dark anyway. Clear when it comes out but when it dries it is darker. I wash his face every morning and that helps. If I've been a bad mommy and skip a day some brownish red does come off on the washcloth. It's not the staining that bothers me so much as the fact that his poor little eyes are alway running. I know a big part of the problem is he loves to rub his head on his bed and so he always has a few pieces of broken hair getting in his eyes.

With mine it's def. allergies. TJ's eyes don't run that much anymore. He does wake up with clear eye goop though. Roxy get HUGE globs of eye goop all the time, sometimes I don't know how she sees, b/c its spread accross her eye ball :rolleyes: And then she just flllloooowwwwssss with clear tears. I try to keep up with the vaccuming, and keeping everything washed and hypoallergenic, but it doesn't seem to do anything :(
