Potty Training I'm in the process of potty training my 11 mos old yorkie. I have been for about 2 mos and was wondering how long it took other people to fully potty train their yorkie... |
Do you mean 11 weeks old? It took me many months of many many trips outdoors in all kinds of weather. But consistency paid off! |
No 11 months old ... the previous owners didn't potty train him. |
well for us it took a while. We got Ruby last April and she was 12 weeks old and we potty trained consistently and then in October she started to ring a bell I have hanging by a ribbon on the door we always use. We don't have to watch her and hound her about going to the bathroom just take her when she is at the door ringing the bell. During the day she stays in a gated area of my kitchen and has a pee pad that she uses maybe 1 out of 5 days. It is a long process though. A lot tougher than potty training a child that's for sure! |
Madeleine is 8 months old and we are still working on it. She does pretty good but still has accidents. |
I would check out the training section. There are a lot of great tips in that area. Very useful info. Hope this helps.:) |
I've done it both ways. We got Loki as a puppy and he was fully trained by about 10 months. It would have been a little sooner but he had some medical issues. By fully trained I mean he would ring his bell to go out, not wait. He was about 1.5 yrs old before he would sit and WAIT for me to come and let him out before peeing on the floor after 5 minutes :) Sammy was nearly 1 yr old when we got her and not trained (same as you) It took us about 6 months to get her to the point where she was ringing the bell to go outside but still having accidents, and another 2 months or so for the pee accidents to stop. She still poops on the floor occasionally if we don't insist she go out at certain times a day (RIGHT after she eats), but we've found that blocking access to her spot inside helped tremendously. We are just very strict about not letting her roam free in the morning until she goes and then not from about 4:00pm until she goes. Sometimes that means crating her until she goes, but it's only a problem maybe once a week. We have her on a routine and she knows she needs to go or no playtime :D |
OK. At 11 months it may be an "easier" training. The pup should have better bladder and bowel control. There are very good tips here on this thread and in the archives about potty training. Pick what is good for your schedule and lifestyle and stick with it. I chose to train outdoors from the beginning and for us it has worked very well. Lots of good luck with your pup. |
Lily is 8 months and is about 90% still working on it, we had to change methods when she was about 5 months old due to the weather it was a little set back. I think all pups are different. |
