How high is too high? Katia used to treat the edge of the couch like it was 100 feet in the air. Now she has started jumping off of it without any hesitation. My couch I guess is regulation height, my question is how high is a dangerous height for her to be jumping? She still won't jump off the bed which is kinda high but the couch is conquered. |
Depends on her size. If she's teenie, perhaps you could put a pillow by it or some stairs so she won't get hurt. |
Maximus JUMPED ON THE BED today for the first time ever!!! The bed is a good 3 feet off the floor..so now I am worried about the baby gate :( ...but I was sooo proud for a minute, but I still won't let him jump down..I just carry him off!!! I think more then the couch height is dangerous..I would think!!! |
Both of mine jump from the couch. Jewels is only 3lbs. I have put pillows down but she still just jumps. She has never got hurt. We have carpet so its a soft landing. She also jumps from the bed. |
Chicle jumps on the couch too.. he started on friday... im concerned about what i read in an old thread that all the jumping can cause arthritis to his joints... what can i do to alieviate this?? besides blocking off the couches..???? |
Let's face it! They're all jumpers and there isn't anything other than an injury that will stop them. Muffin, even though she weighed 12 lbs. would scare me to death when she would get excited at something she saw out of a window while she was sitting on the back of either of the couches. She would jump and land halfway out in the middle of the room! |
Thanks for the replies because I thought my dog was insane. She is 2.5 pounds and jumps on carpet so I hope that's ok. I remember when a sidewalk curb was too high for her now she's flying off of couches. They grow up so fast "sniff* |
We try to avoid letting Yoda jump off anything higher than the couch. Ramps or steps are a good idea for a bed. If your Yorkie is a jumper, I'd suggest having a carpeted landing area just in case, as it would cushion the impact. |
I know this sounds ridiculous with all of our "flying yorkies" but I read that you should never let them jump off or onto anything higher than their shoulder! AArrrghhh! The reason they gave, other than the obvious risk of breaking a leg, was that in later years the cumulative effect of the stress on their joints could cause severe arthritis. I know there is no way to prevent the jumping but we can probably lessen it by using ramps and steps as Fasteddie suggested. We can also train them not to jump off things that are too high by not encouraging it and even discouraging it with the "no" comman when appropriate. I did have a minaiture poodle in my 20s who developed arthritis when she was older and I feel terribly gulity now because I used to let her jump up and down from all of my furniture incluing a huge and very tall king size bed. I try now with my westie nd my yorkies to have steps to the beds, the couches and the chairs they are allowed on. Yorkies and terriers in general are very athletic (Chai I swear has springs!) and agile so I think small jumps are okay, but everything in moderation I guess. |
I agree that they are adrenaline junkies when it comes to jumping! It is going to be hard to keep them from jumping. |
