What's The Difference? Please excuse my ignorance here but I have a serious question that may seem dumb to many of you. My daughter, my husband and I are going in half and half and buying a yorkie pup for my sister here shortly and in talking to my sister last night while we were looking through the paper, I said, well here's one that says AKC and here's one that says CKC, what's the real difference? Can anyone tell me? I know that AKC means American Kennel Club and doesn't CKC mean Continental Kennel Club? But what's the difference between the two? Does the CKC mean that perhaps the parents aren't 100% yorkie? Thanks in advance. |
Uh oh. This is one of those topics that gets heated around here.;) CKC is either Continental Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club (usually the first). There is always a chance that a dog registered with any kennel club is not purebred but that increases with Continental. There are a few good CKC breeders but it isn't a good registry in general. I would most likely never buy a Continental registered dog (and never to breed or show). Canadian Kennel Club (which doesn't apply to you) is fine also. |
I think almost anyone can register with CKC, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. Piper is CKC and I couldn't love him more. |
I know that my Caesar was AKC when I got him and I decided that I wanted to dual register him with CKC. It was no problem, because CKC recognises AKC. AKC, however, doesn't recognise CKC, so if your dog is registered through CKC only, you can't dual register it with AKC. I think all the other American dog registries recognise AKC for dual registration, but AKC doesn't recognise any of them. |
I use to think that some I my questions were dumb to. Never think that. Everyone has to start and learn from somewhere and this is a great place to learn. If your buying one for a pet only then I think either one is fine. |

With any registry (including CKC) the bloodlines have to be checked for diseases like liver shunt and luxating patella. If a CKC breeder is taking the time to do this and does pre breeding testing ont their dogs and breeds to standard then it is probably fine. There are a lot of bad breeders breeding AKC too. Just make sure you trust the breeder. I know you weren't trying to stir things up.:) |

I would steer clear of the newspaper classifieds when looking for a yorkie. Most reputable breeders do not use classifieds to advertise their dogs. If you do go through the classifieds, you're going to have to be VERY careful to make sure the breeder is reputable. From my experience, the breeders in the major cities around here are all byb's in the newspapers...not saying that's true for everywhere...but you'll most likely have to work your way through the bad ones to get to any possibly good ones. I suggest going to www.ytca.org and looking at breeders on their site in Ohio. |
you can't dual with akc if he is originally ckc, but if he is fixed you can ILP him with akc thereofor having him dual registered. |
