Am I screwing it up? I take Coco for walks and she's great. She's a very good girl, but often runs in front of me and just prances a feet steps in front of me. If she's on the side of me, she switches from one side to the other. Is this bad? Should I be keeping her on one side next to me, not letting her run in front? She just has so much fun running. |
I watched the dog whisperer the other night and he said to walk the dogs on your left side and always next to you or behine you!!!..WELL...easier said then done, Maximus also runs ahead and after watching th eepisode..I tried to enact some of the rule..lol..I walk out first, when I stop he stops, when I go he goes, etc. etc....everytime he went ahead I stopeed...but at the end it didn't seem like he was having much fun...so I let him play and walk ahead as long as he wasn't pulling...next week in doggy kindergarten we are going over this...so I'll let you know what I find out!!! |
I too deal with this on walks,,, I guess you could keep the leash tight and to one side, if it bothers you, I tried it awhile, but Bailey has to MARk every tree, pole, etc, so he goes from one side to the other, which is fine,, we go on walks for him,, so he can go wild. :) |
Sounds like Deegan is not alone. He walks all around me. I use a Flexi leash so he can run a few feet in front or behind or whatever he wants. As long as he's not getting tangled up in my feet, I don't mind. I guess it's what you are comfortable with. |
Carter and I went to a private trainer. She taught us the traditional "heel." The hardest thing for me to learn was not to keep the leash tight. Loose leash walking is the best. Now when we go for walks, I allow him to loose leash walk ahead or behind me just a bit but when I say "heel", he returns to my side. He always walks on my left side. It is much easier for you if your dog walks on one side or the other, without switching. If they switch and you're talking and not paying attention, you could trip over them or step on them. Its a safety issue for me - thus why I trained Carter to remain on the left. |
Chewy does this too, it's a puppy thing and they will learn. i however like to walk Chewy on the right side. I'm right handed and just feel more control over the situation and also like Carter's mom said, I think giving them a little slack on the leash is better. I have also noticed that since I have started taking Chewy to the park and letting him run off-leash, he walks better for me and does less pulling. Good Luck Nobella and all it takes is practice. |
I just got licensed as a dog trainer and the way that they taught us is that you should keep them to one side of you. They also brought up a very good point about not walking the dog behind you because you can not see if something happens. |
Well when she switches sides, I keep trying to keep her on one side. So her leash is always kind tight, not loose because I'm trying to keep her on one side. I don't know how to train her to stick to one side of me without making it a not so fun walk for her. I want her to enjoy her time. |

Lexi has always just been such a good little girl and walks beside me never pulling, then along came Max and he is just all over the place, back & forth, in front, in back & all around all the while pulling like he's in a hurry to go somewhere. He has so much fun though and we too tried to keep him short leashed and on one side next to us but he just doesn't get it and thinks he's being punished so now we're back to letting him run all over! I know its not "correct" but that's my job to spoil him, right? |
