pain meds and care after spay My little rescue Chihuahua, Kozanna, is going to be spayed on Tuesday. Very nervous mom here! She weighs about 4 pounds. Advice please on pain meds, etc., after her surgery. What are some experiences with pain meds? Can I give her baby aspirin? Should I get liquid baby aspirin? Should I get pain meds from the vet? I will get some wet food to hide medication in case I need to do that. I have no experience getting pills down Kozanna. Goodness, I'll be sooooo glad when this is over! Many thanks for any advice/experience. |
I would get pain meds from the vet. If you have that you wont need to have asprin. I only ended up giving mine one pain med but they are good to have in case your dog is having problems. Mine were fine the next day |
I am not really sure, but I don't think you are suppose to give them asprin, or baby asprin I think it has something to do with making the blood thinner. I had my Jack russel mix spayed about 8 years ago, and they didn't give her anything. They told me she really wouldn't need anything, just rest and watch about jumping off furniture. Someone else may be more helpful..... |
our vet gave us pain med but we only used it once the next morning but other than that they were normal so i didn't give any after that. |
They can have baby aspirin, you never want to give ibuprofen or advil, aleve none of that, can kill your dog, but the baby aspirin is fine..Mine just got spayed last Wed. she's 3.9 lbs. no meds here...she's been fine, slept most of Thursday when I picked her up, now she's back to normal |
Thanks. I feel a little better. Hoping she won't need meds for long. I'll get meds from the vet rather than try to medicate her myself! |
I recommend getting them from your vet. Don't overdo it on pain meds though. Feeling a little pain is good for them as it keeps them from hurting themselves. You can't really tell a dog "you just had major surgery and need to be still and rest for a few days so you can heal"...if they feel a little pain, they'll know their limits. If they think they feel good, they may be too active and hurt themselves. Lacy thought she felt great a couple days later and was already running around..she ended up tearing her internal stitches. She had to be put under again and restitched up. So make sure you keep her still for a few days afterwards |
I would get it from the vet. They might prescripe Rimadyl (I don't like it at all) or Tramadol. Sometimes pain meds can't be given (with c-sections, liver disease...) but if it all possibly, it should be after a spay. It is a very invasive surgery. No doctor would be cutting open my abdomen without pain meds and it is wrong to ask an animal (who is in obvious pain) to go through that. Ellie was in extreme pain after her spay. She needed meds. You do have to watch that they stay calm though. |
your vet may be like mine and not give anything..Ginger pretty much laid around the day after surgery and most of the next day. on baby aspirin, they can have 5 mg per pound of weight.. |
