leaving your pup.. help!!! we left chip in the bathroom for 10 mins max and when i came home, he was crying his little heart out :( we put him in the bathroom with all his toys, his bed, and food and water, and when i came back he had chewed through the plug for my charger and gone for a number 2 on his pad, which is good, but it was a consistancy i dont wish to go in to :( what is the best way to get ur pup used to being on their own? as he needs to learn for when we go to work PLEASE HELP!!!! |
Maybe a crate might be a good idea, I have a small one that can collapse for storage or travel, I line the bottom with a puppy pad, put her bed and a couple of toys in there and her water bowl, she sleeps in this at night and will get in by herself when she's tired, its her safe haven, her den, and i cover it with a blanket at night too so its nice and cosy. She feels cosy and safe in there at bedtimes or when we are at work, it works for us! and it would be peace of mind for you too when you are not able to watch him, at least you know he is not chewing something he shouldn't! Your pup will get used to being left, maybe a heat pad under his bed, and a radio switched on while you are out? |
yeah i left my phone playing some music for him, thats why the charger was in there charging my phone!!!! i must have left a bit hanging down. i was so worried when i saw that it was chewed through i checked him out but he seems ok :) still as nippy as ever, we have a pen for him, and he kinda likes it in there, he is getting used to it now, we leave him init while we are pottering about, but he knows we are there so he is ok, i just dont know what to do :( he is getting there with the toilet training but its leaving him thats the trouble now! |
I know it's very hard but it does take time. Try putting on a radio so there is sound in the house. There are several different products on the market today that may or maynot help. I tried them all. The best I can say is he's still a puppy and wants company. It will take time for him to feel confident being by himself. Buddy will be 4 soon and he still wimpers when I leave in the morning and will not touch a treat I leave for him until I arrive home. He also is in front of the door when I open it. Sometime I wonder if he sleeps there all day:( It's very important to take time, I set aside 1/2 hr every morning and sit and play with him before I get ready for work. I have been doing this since the day I brought him home.Might sound alittle extreme but they are alone all day so what's 1/2hr? Try tiring him out before you leave. Give him something to cuddle, a soft toy perhaps, put the radio on. Make sure he can not get to the cord. good luck |
If I didn't work, then I couldn't afford a yorkie. But I tell you this, when I get home, we have a definite routine, and that routine is from getting home time until bedtime, it is all about Mika. |
I'd try the crate for now. It should make him feel more secure after a few days. |
when i have to leave in the mornings for work i leave the tv on and the light on for herr in the kitchen and block her from going where she can get hurt until my boyfriend can get her which is usually bout 10 and i leave by 7 so shes home alone for maybe 3 hrs...so she has the tv to keep her company and stuff |
What I would suggest doing is getting an xpen to set up in the kitchen or somewhere where there is no carpet..When you're not home, leave the tv or a radio going for him..My son has the brother of my little girl, he was tearing up(not chewing) pee pads(they're almost 6 mos now), well, my dh suggested the radio(I had forgotten about that), and he hasn't messed with his pee pad since...good luck |
i leave the tv and light on and martini still is tearing the wee wee pads up and i get mad cause she makes a mess and she has been doing it for the past 2 days Quote:

I would definitely try an x-pen or gating him in the kitchen. I would not leave a dog in a crate for more than a couple of hours. I like to use the washable potty pads. You just need to practice leaving him for short periods so he can get used to it. |
To be quite serious... I have never left Roxy alone. She is always with someone... So I have no idea what I'd do if I ever had to leave her alone, but I think someone will always be available. Between my mother, sister, step-father, boyfriend, boyfriends mom. I actually MUST have a babysitter for her if I have to go somewhere that she can't go. Or else, I cant go... So you can see why now she is like a baby to me? lol. I don't leave her at home alone, ever. I probably made her that way, and she might be able to be on her own, but after a story I heard from a lady... I dont want to take that chance to find out :( |
I just got my puppy & I leave him alone in the living room for about 11 hours while my wife & I are out to work. He has his crate, toys, food & about 200 sq. ft. to play around in. |

I have had my little Mister for 2 years. He has always been blocked in a small kitchen or bathroom area while we are at work. We bought a doggie gate that has a swing door so that it is always up and all we do is close the door when we leave. We did feel guilty about leaving him all day so we had to get him a brother. They keep each other company during the day and we know they are safe behind the gate...had to start taping the weewee pads down as they were shredding them...gotta love the boys!:) |
