Does your furbaby play?? I was wondering if anyone else's baby doesn't play with toys. Willie is just over 1 yr old, and I got him 4 weeks ago today from the breeder. Once in a great while he will pick up a toy and play with it, but not for long and not very often. He came with a cute little stuffed pink pig, but I get the feeling it was brand new. He has played with that a minute or two and one of the cats' toys a little longer a couple of times. I am here most days all day and just wonder if he maybe is not happy here. He plays with the cats, chasing them and them chasing him back and forth! That is toooo cute! :p And he will jump and twirl and play with me like that. But no toy time. He broke his lil' leg not long after I got him, but he still runs when he wants to. He wants to spend most of his time sleeping with me on the couch, when I am sitting there or just laying around or sleeping in the bedroom when I am busy with something else. I just want him to be happy and I worry that he is not. He does seem to love me a lot, but I am a worrier and think he should play more often. ~Melody Owned and operated since 2007 By: |
I don't know. Mine have always played, played and played. They never wanted to stop till they dropped. But I suppose some just aren't toy-oriented. Mine have always preferred me to get on the floor at their level to play. I could only bring up some possible ideas: His balls should be squeaky balls and small enough and soft enough for him to pick up with his small mouth. Mine also likes long toys we can play tug of war with, although she doesn't tug very hard!:D Just about any small squeaky toy. Seems to prefer plush toys to vinyl, except for balls, but she even has some soft plush sqeaky balls. Good luck!:) |
Ellie always has played. Her favorite toys are squeaky balls. All I have to say is, "Go get your toy".:) |
Chachi loves toys and plays every night. Jewels hardly ever plays she just wants you to hold her. They are all different. |
I got Pixie at 13 months and she was not use to playing with toys, she much prefers playing/fighting with Cali. She may pick up a toy only to take it away from Cali and once the thrill of victory is gone she drops it. I think being with other dogs at the breeders they play with each other not so much toys. |
You don't know what his days were like at the breeders. That might explain his temperament |
You said in another post that he broke his leg at Christmas and you weren't able to afford to have a plate put in as your vet suggested, so he only has a cast on his leg. His leg couldn't possibly be healed in just three weeks. That could explain why he doesn't want to play. Since he doesn't have a plate holding his leg together, didn't your vet tell you to restrict his activity to give his leg a chance to heal? I'm concerned that you say he chase the cats and twirls around. I'm sure once his leg is healed and he settles in a bit, he'll probably start to play more. Right now, though, you need to make sure he stays quiet enough to give his leg a chance to heal so you aren't forced to do that expensive surgery. |
Mine is two years old now and he doesn't play with his toys that much (I've had him from 3 months). He played more with toys when he was a puppy -- but now he prefers to roughhouse in the floor with me and ocassionally with play fetch. He does have a couple toys he likes, one is a crinkly fake newspaper that he attacks (if I put some treats inside it) and the other is his beloved nylabone dental chew, which he LOVES. I'm a little disappointed that he doesn't play much on his own -- but he seems happy and healthy. |
Some yorkies dont like to play with toys. When my father had a yorkie he was about 3 years old. He never touched the toys. It was so wierd for me because I thought all dogs like to play with toys. Then I found out they some just dont like it. Honestly Maxi like to play but he is mostly into one toy his baseball ball. If I ll ignore the ball then he will be going to his box toy and try to get something else to get my attention. Occasionally he ll surpise me with a different toy, but he doesnt really like to play with his toys just himself he always brings it to me so I ll play with him lol Dont get discouraged if your baby doesnt play toys. I am sure he loves it in your house just all yorkies are different some dont preffer toys. |
Zada and Azrael have NEVER played with toys. Once in a VERY great while they will pick one up and tease the other with it. They would rather play chase with each other, and even then Zada doesn't play often or for very long. Then I got Raziel Dec. 21st. She was just a few days over three months old and boy does she love the toys and to chase the other two all over the yard. It seems she has helped Azrael quite a bit because Azrael loves to play. They have become great buds. So don't worry if they don't play. Just worry if they don't eat. ;) |
Mine plays til he drops! Some times i tell him will you share all that energy with mommy :D |
Pita doesn't really play either, if my daughters bring their Chiweenies(dachsund, Chihuahua mix) over she MAY play with them but mostly she sits with us and acts like a diva. My husband can get her going for a little bit but she really is pretty laid back. She is very happy and content being just the way she is. I don't think it's anything to worry about, it's just their personality, they all have different ones. |
lacey only likes to tkae toys away from others lol. once in a while she will play with a toy but only if we are playing with her. my other non yorkie dogs all LOVE tp play with toys. lacey is sick to so maybe thats why she doesnt play much. |

I bet that was it. I'm glad he's feeling better! How long will he have his cast on before they xray to see if his leg has healed? |
