where are the experts? I have a couple of questions first I would like to say hello and thanks in advance. the question is not for me but other people questions making me curious. I take my boy max with me just about everywhere I go and I always get complimented on him and his coat. well.people always ask me will their pup have a silky coat like max and I don't know. Max was silky as a 9wk old pup his hair was super short until about 8-9mths and just caught up to my sisters dog. 1. do ALL true silk coated yorkies have the silk satin fell as pups to adults? I hear so many people on YT say their pups coat changed to silky and I wonder if they just have a nicer modified coat. 2. is cottony so bad that most won't have anything to do with it? as so many that approach me are only concerned about texture 3. I am worried as when I start to look for a boy in the future and the owners say the pup will have a silky coat should I stay away and only look for one with a silk coat as a pup like max to be sure?? thank you for all your advice and experiences that you share. Boy these little yorkies are probably the most debated I have ever heard of |

**bump** for ya....it is a good post and you can also post this in the grooming forum or breeding forum since those gals know a lot more about the Yorkie coats than we do. Izzy has a silky coat but had from birth and I used to have to males with cotton coats. I personally think they are both beautiful and they both matt but I think the silk coats matt less but that's my open personal opinion. |

The true silk coat will be cold to the touch as an adult. And of course, very silky in texture. As a newborn, you cant tell much. You can do an educated guess by the parents and their bloodlines. As the pups get older, I have noticed that if they "break" color on the head and it is a platinum color, the coat will be silky. If the pup head "break" to a dark gold first, they will usually be a soft coat and black and tan as an adult. These are generalities and not set in stone. Your best bet is looking at the parents and the blooklines behind them. |

Platinum is white. But a very silvery white. I have a nice boy that went grayish on his head when he started to break color. He is very silky but his tan on his head and legs is very light in color, almost a champaign. His muzzel is turning a beautiful dark tan, but I am not sure if he will ever be completely tan on his head. He is 18 months now. He comes from a very nice background so I am hoping that he will completely clear as he gets older. I have seen other dogs that go a smutty grey first on the head that never clear and are always a smutty grey/tan. |

Those Yorkies are adorable. Again, I have no clue on the coat, but wow! The pup, sire and dam are all gorgeous. |
caots Its really all so confusing.you really can't tell by a picture unless its really good quality no flash and close up.some of the pics where the owner said their coats were cotton have them in long coats and they sure do look gorgeous. I thought all cotton coats would have to be shaved?? I thought silky was soft but that is the cottony right?? so silk must be similar to a free flowing silkier feel with a little thicker texture. I really want a true silk although I have never seen a true cotton in person. heck its so confusing I think my boy is modified one moment the next I think he is silk. heck if he is silk then I want a cotton coat LOL!!!:rolleyes: oh! forget it |
