I think that you didn't realize how different it is training these smaller breeds. I've never had a yorkie till my two, and the labs and shelties I've had were def. easier. During the early training of both my yorkies, I honestly took them out every 20 minutes or so and made a really big deal when they went. For accidents, you have to be watching constantly when they are so young... and I would say AAA! when I caught them, but not really yell or get mad. I don't think you are taking him out often enough...at 12 weeks, they are little peeing machines. hang in there...it will get easier! |

I still cannot get Minnie trained:mad: Shes ruined my house, all the hardwood:( Scamp is now just whining @ the door:rolleyes: hopefully finally he has got it ((Touch wood)) Minnie is 3 yrs old ^& doesnt even like to go outside...I have to lift her up & put her outside, even though I go out too:aimeeyork ... Going to read everyones posts maybe there is help for me too:thumbup: |
OMG ... you sound like the one Lady on here a while ago. .... he is 12 weeks old. A Baby doesn't know how to go POTTY until they get TRAINED to do so. Same thing with the dog. Why did you get a Dog if you don't have the Pations to train him ???? :( :( :( |
Sometimes I read this threads and get very upset:mad: ..............First of, you know NO puppy wether is a yorkie or pitbull is going to be potty trained at 12 weeks......................Enjoy your puppy because you "sound" very mad:confused: ........... I dont want to judge you but you sound aggressive:thumbdown .................Take a few deep breaths and "learn" what is best for your yorkie. I had 3 baby yorkies at one time and they had accidents but I had alot of patience...........When their new mommys came to get them I made sure I told them that they were NOT fully potty trained but if they were persistent and patienced with them they would be soon.................Dont you know he has a small bladder?? :thumbdown |

Hear is a cute thing that I read in The Complete Idiots Guide to Positive Dog Training, " If he does mess in the house, grab the nearest newspaper, roll it up, and HIT YOURSELF over the head while chanting, "I forgot to watch my dog, I forgot to watch my dog", If your dog laughs, praise him!" |

You have come to the right place for help. Every one of us have been in your shoes. It is not easy to potty train a Yorkie, but if you know that going in... you will be successful. :D Do you want him to be potty pad trained or outside trained? I think it is very important in the begining to stick to only one spot, where they are allowed to go potty. It also has to be close by. They are so little, some times just crossing a big room is to far away. Do you have a place in your house with out carpet? Where you could gate it off. Do you work? Is someone home with him during the day? Potty training is a full time job and so very important!! Puppies have to go when they wake up, a few minutes after they eat, and after a few minutes of play. Does he have a crate? What do you do with him at night time. **When I brought home my little guy at 10 weeks, I blocked off the family room: which has hardwood floors and rolled up the area rug. I liturally sat on the floor and watched him like a hawk. I did this for about 4 days!! Waiting for him to have to go pee. He would run around like a 'crazy puppy' in a circle...like he was looking for a spot. Then I would pick him up and placed him on the potty pad. If he went, we would praise him "good potty" and give him a treat Everytime! He is now 6 months old and he still looks at us for the treat! Never scold them for accidents at this age...they are to little...just a firm ah,ah,ah. As he got better we expanded his area a little. If he had an accident we would go back to the beginning again. After our little one had the idea of potty training. I kept him with me on a leash, while I did my chores around the house. I would hang his leash on the door knob of what ever room I was in, with a potty pad near by. I still do not trust him to have complete freedom of the house. But, here are certain rooms that I trust him in. Remember potty training takes lots of time and patience. If you are stressed your puppy with know. I hope these ideas help. |

.... we make Maya go outside too. She is 10 months now and still has an accident every once in a while. You are right though it is worth it ! ;) And it is not her fault, she lets me know when she has to go .... runs around like crazy sniffing the floor .... thats one of her things and standing by the door and bakring at me looking toward the door. Maybe you need to watch your Puppy and see what he/she does befor they have to go. :aimeeyork |
I know it can be frustrating at times... but all I can say is PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE. We all went through that... it takes some time and consistency and a lot depends on... you! :) He'll get the hang of it, he's still too young. |
Both my dogs are trained they come when called & are very obediant in commands BUT this potty issue takes the biscuit:mad: When it rains Minnie will go & hide....... she hates the rain :animal36 Scamp will go out in all weather ...his name suits him he is all "Scamp"... They have been through obediant training school ...Its just the potty they know what I am saying to them ...they are just darn Stubborn!!! I dont think I would get another Yorkie! |

.... Question for you ..... what do you do with the Pee Pads ??? Maya is trained ( well 90 %) to go outside, but when it is tooo cold or raining she pees infront of the door. How do you do that ..... do you think I can still train her ( 10 months) to do that too ???? See, if we leave she will hold it until we get back .... |
I would get another Yorkie! My house has been peed in...in every room except for the ones the doors are kept closed to. It's hard to keep up and sometimes I find that I can't keep up. BUT.... The love I feel for and the love I get from my sweet, sweet Sassy is so much more important to me than the floors. We will be pulling out the carpet and replacing with hardwood and tile. I think this will be a help to use all. She doesn't pee on hard surfaces...just the carpet. I knew when I got her that it would not be an easy task to potty train her. It was my decision to get her anyway. I have never regretted it for a moment. She is just like a baby. It's my job to take care of her and nuture her and train her. She has no responsibility to me. She just naturally responds to what I give to her....and let me say...the reward of that is simply beyond measure. She has my heart and in return, I have her love and devotion. It is well worth the trouble and effort. :luvu: :kiss2:    :hearts-en :hearts-xx :luv: :hearts6: I thank God that she is in my life! |
Patience, Patience, Patience. For one I think you are taking him out too much. You need to have a set schedule to when you would like him to go so he understands that outside if for that. Now, in the meantime you need to have potty pads and confine him to a specific area until he knows to only go on the potty pads. My Yumi is only 10 months, but she now knows to use the PP when she is home ( or visiting someone elses house), but she does her morning and evening stuff on our walks. Normally she pees one or twice on the pad during the day now, with no accidents. But that could change next week...LOL. She also travels the house to find it at night for afterhours relief. :) Keep in mind that small breeds are always harder to train. You need to give it atleast a year for full potty training without pads. Good Luck! |

I agree whole-heartedly...and hard surfaces will help. I have hard wood floors and my little stinky-poo Yumi would seek out my throw rugs in the beginning...I got so tired of cleaning rugs...it was crazy! But now she has it down for the most part! :p |

Please keep him in the kitchen or crate train him. Put pee pads down. You have a way to go yet before your little one understands to go out doors. Why would you allow him to wonder around your carpets? Put a diaper or belly band on him if you allow him free roam. Your making yourself crazy for something he has no control over. It's not his fault. He's an infant! Your going to need lot's more patience if you expect him to learn. Lot's more patience. Hang in there it will get better in about another month if you continue to keep up the taking outdoors. It's not easy work but it is worth it in the end. |
Martini is 6 mts old and is pretty good we reward her when she goes on the wee wee pad and if not she dont get rewarded..the only time she makes mistakes is when she gets overaly excited and dont wanna miss out on whats going on lol go figure shes like a baby who dont wanna go to sleep lol |
I totally understand your frustration about the "going potty" everywhere. My little Chelsea is over a year old and she still hasn't been potty trained properly yet. It is indeed a challenge of patience. My partner and i both have fulltime jobs also so it will be a while before Chelsea gets fully trained. I love her to pieces though. Her barking hasn't stopped either. So all i can say is...get ready for the challenge years...but still shower your little one with love!!! Good luck |
I guess I have to thank God for Baxter - Not that I don't already, but he is fully potty trained - He'll be a year in a few days and he's been trained for months now. The other day - it was so nasty out- I actually wanted him to go indoors - and the poor dog just kept whining and whimpering until I took him outside. He did what he needed to and came back in - But at 12 wks - I don't believe we were even close to potty training - Actually - I just got him at 12 wks - Keep working at it - It will work. He's still a baby. |
well I feel for the dog. First hes in a crate all day, then when he is out and pees he gets your aggression. Please if it bothers you that much, dont get so upset you hurt him, hes just a baby. Please have patience. |
Kayla is 6mo. old and she is just now beginning to get the hang of it. Have patience because he is just a baby. |

I agree with you...I'd give up the carpet way before I quit having yorkies. I'd have all hard floors now if I could. One day when I've got my dream home and all the yorkies I want, I'll have all hard floors |
I agree with you guys too!!! Even if my house stunk to the high heavens (which it doesnt... lol) I wouldnt get rid of Roxy. My solution... I buy Luvs diapers... I don't have to cut a hole, cause Roxy doesnt have a tail, but since I was thinking about getting another Yorkie, I tested it, and all you have to do is cut a hole, and stick the tail right through! (I tested it on my Chihuahua who is trained) Roxy is trained, but sometimes she has her "accidents"... I have her paper in the other room & sometimes she wants to be with Mommy so much she doesnt get to the paper... So, in case of accidents... we have the Pampey on. Just find the right size!!! I pay 9.99 at WalMart for a 116 pack of diapers that last forever!!! If you have a bigger Yorkie then it might only be like 106 diapers or something like that, but thats still a lot, and worth it!!! I love Luvs! They saved my carpet! |
use a belly band it can take 8 months or longer for small dogs to get house trained! |
