Just because she isn't sure what day she should actually start the breeding process doesn't mean she hasn't done plenty of research as to size/genetics of the stud, risks of the pregnancy, etc. It's not fair to the OP to make such assumptions. It's not like she's been trying to force her baby to tie (if that's the correct term) before asking the question, she's asking first which is exactly what she should be doing.:thumbup:

How does a person get a breeder to be their "mentor"? Can it be done on YT or do they need to live close by?

IMO, I think its better to find a good one close by that you trust and respect and have seen litters from there sire and dams because they are close enough so that they personally help through the whole process....Oh and welcome to YT.

Sounds great! Who lives close to Cinti.??? And would like to become a mentor someday? I have a 12 and a half year old SPAYED little girl and a 10 month old baby yorkie. I have started to search for a male. In 1998 I bred 2 yorkies and everything turned out great, but after reading YT for the past 7 months or so I realize how Lucky I was!!!!:)

a good place to start is your own breeder.

if not there, try to go to your local dog shows and speak with breeders.

and if not there, yt

i will say that this needs to be done prior to breeding, learn everything you can. read read read. get books.

your best offence is education, knowledge, and ethics.

i cannot tell you how many times people have come to yt with a life or death situation that they wanted yt to help them with. i am talking terrifing experiences that due to lack of knowledge, they have lost litters and mommies. had they done all their homework for breeding, these litters and mommies would still be with us.

I really hate to see Lisa one of our YT breeders get torn down over one statement she gave when she is the only one who has offered the Op breeding advice. Those of you who say your afraid to post should think about what the breeders are thinking. Why should they give advice freely when they are going to be riddiculled

I was looking on line for books on breeding yesterday and did not come across any specifically for yorkies. Any you know of?

Maybe she shouldnt be posting if she herself is asking question about heat issues....like I said everyone has questions and has to start somewhere....

I think you missed my point that Lisa is the only one who has so gracely offered breeding advice and she really shouldnt be attacked. I know everyone has to start somewhere and I think Lisa also acknowledged that

No one is ridiculing Lisa, we certainly weren't laughing at her, that would be cruel. I was only showing compassion for the OP, when I read Lisa's first statement I had the same reaction as the OP. I therefore expressed to her (the OP) my opinion. Lisa asked me what I found uncalled for and I told her. I think it's wonderful that she's offered such great advice and I know I appreciate it but why did it have to be given with harsh words? I just don't get it.:confused:

Bottom line is that if your not a breeder, be cautious of asking questions about breeding (IMO). Every single thread Ive read about a YT'er wanting to get helpful info on breeding their pup always gets a hard time from the more experienced breeders/members. If you dare sound like your a first timer...be ready to get an earful about what you should have & could have done, rather than a non-judgemental..here's what you should do. Why is that?

If the first thing a person responds with is a negative or judgemental comment...but then follows it up with some helpful advise... is that really helpful???

I just think its so important for us to HELP one another with out all of the judgement. Because if you look at the big picture - its making a lot of members scared to ask certain questions and causing them to be even less informed than they started out...and what do you think happens from there - backyard breeders, unhealthy pups....etc etc...

SO LETS REMEMBER TO HELP...NOT HURT ONE ANOTHER

i wish you well. since you gals did not like my response, i will not answer any more questions regarding breeding. now i know why the breeders here don't answer these questions.

I think we all know that people get defensive when they are told what they don't want to hear :rolleyes: You gave great advice. :thumbup: Too many people are breeding their pets and have no clue what they are doing. Yorkies are so overbred now and health problems are way too common. Breeding is best left up to the experts
