one more birthing question please... My bitch normally weighs about 4-4 1/2 lbs, dad is about 5-5 1/2 lbs. I was planning on letting nature take its course with the birth, but the closer it gets, I get a little nervous with all the c-sect talk. Maybe for peace of mind I'll take her to her vet for a look-see or an x-ray to make sure the pup(s) can be naturally born...agree? |
I agree. She should be seen. If you let nature take its course that would include not doing c-sections. About 20% of Yorkies need them so that means 20% of pregnant female Yorkies would likely die. Yorkies take a lot of time and money to breed properly. Have you had your male and female tested for STDs, LP, LS, CT, hip, shoulder, eye and ear problems? Are their lines clear of LP, LS? Did your female come from a line of free whelpers? Happy Breeding:) |
I think regardless of testing (which is a moot point right now since she is already pregnant), it is a good idea to have x-rays, especially if she is a first time mom. My yorkie Sunshine comes from lines of free whelpers and she in fact was able to free whelp her first litter. But her second required a c-section. I would not have known she needed the section if I had not had x-rays done. Even though the vet was pretty sure she would have then naturally, I knew within the last week that it was iffy, so when she started in labor and didn't progress, I took her in and she did require the section. It is much better to be safe than sorry, so I would opt for the x-rays. They not only can show you the size of the puppies, they also help to determine if she has had them all by knowing how many are in there. Good luck. Sonya |
Hopefully you wrote down the day of the first tie. Take her in about 5 days before delivery date(from first tie) for an x-ray. The vet should be able to measure and tell you if the pups or pup is too big to deliver natually. Its better to be safe than sorry. Nothing like a call to the emergency vet at 3 am for a c-section at the cost of 1800 or more. |

Diane (the lady where I got my dogs and is helping me with breeding) has never had to have a c-section...:p |
C-sections are not uncommon in the Yorkie breed. Its good to know what lines you are breeding and not just breeding two with unknown backgrounds. A big grandmother could be waiting to come out in a 4 pounders litter more than likely causing a c-section. |
