yorkie birth approaching!... My 3 year old yorkie is about to have a litter. I never saw my pair mate, but I guess nature found its way! I heard rumor that I am suppossed to cut her hair on her belly so the new pups cannot suffocate while they nurse...is this true anyone? Thanks! |
Welcome to YT. It makes it easier for them to nurse and I have had one almost choke to death getting caught up in the fur when I tried not to cut the hair once. |
Welcome to YT :wavey: Congratulations to your Yorkie girl and good for you for coming here and asking questions and trying to do everything right :) I'm sure someone here, a breeder perhaps, will jump in and help answer your question - but yes I'm almost positive you are supposed to shave them, I'm of course no breeder though ;) |

thanks, I also raise jack russel pups, but yorkies I've never done. We've had our pair for over a year and she would never let him touch her...wrong! |
thanks for your reply, I'll take her to the vet. |
Yay for new babies!!! :2puppy: I hope all goes well! Keep us informed. |
hi welcome to YT! do you know how far along your little girl is? i'd be sure to get an x-ray done at around day 55 i believe to see how many pups there are so you know what to expect. |
yes, you need to clip her belly hair really close or even shave it. ALSO, the puppies kind of scoot around on mama so watch when they start to nuzzle up around her neck in the face hair and beard. One of my few days old puppies got tangled in the mam's bear. Never had that to happen before but it did last time. She was dragging the puppy around under her chin. |
Wow, you're like 2 hours or less from me..we go to cherokee once in awhile to the casinos...good luck on your babies, let us know when they get here |
On my expectant moms, using scissors, I just gently cut the hair on the belly and around the nipples. I cut the length on the sides so it is no more that 3 or 4 inches. I also trim the hair on the hind legs and rear end. |
you are right, we are about 2 hrs. Thanks, keep you posted. |
