Question about yorkie in heat!!! Hi guys, I have a question. I have a 2 year old yorkie girl and she is healthy and we don't have any big problems with her. She went into heat when she was about 6 months old and the second time, when she turned 1 year. Since then she didn't go into heat. She is not neutered and she hasn't been in contact with other "boy" doggies (you know what I mean). I am wondering if there might be something wrong with her. I thought that dogs go into heat twice a year, for spring and fall. Please correct me if I am wrong. Please, if anyone has any information I would really appreciate the help. Is it possible you just missed her heat cycle? It is possible that she could have some type of hormone imbalance |
I don't think I missed her cycle. The first who heats that she went through she actually bled, and she was always sleepy. I haven't notices any bleeding. She has been sleepy lately but I thought it might be related to the weather. I am really confused :( |
Hypothryroidism will cause them not to have heat cycles. Fatigue is another symptom. You may want to have some testing done. |
Is this threatning? It sounds very serious! Can you give me some more information on that. What kind of tests would I have to do? I don't know if that helps but 6 months ago she had a blood test done and everything was fine. I am very worried now. :( |

Thank you about the information. I just read it but I haven't noticed many symptoms that they are talking about. She is 11 pounds but she's been between 10-12lbs always... she's one of the bigger yorkies I guess... But she's been eating normally, very very very energetic, no hair loss or anything like that. I guess it's hard to notice the symptoms but I am definitely going to call my vet and see if they can help my little baby :( |
I'm sorry you're worried.:( I think your girl is probably just fine. Of course it is always best to let the vet make that call but Ellie was the same way before she was spayed. She didn't seem to have "regular" heats. It is probably just a hormone issue. It may be more incentive to get her spayed since she is/may be having hormone problems. |
Several years ago, I had this with problem with my cocker, Peppi. Her heats cycles were never normal. At times she would come in heat shortly after going out of heat and other times it was a very long time in between heats. It was due to a hormonal imbalance and we had her spayed. I would definitely talk with your vet and see if he thinks additional testing needs to be done. If you aren't planning on breeding her, spaying is really the best for her health. |
It varies on how many mos in between heats..but, they don't go spring and fall, or summer and winter...it is true cats have their kittens from spring to a certain time and not in the winter, but, not so with dogs.. |
What kind of dog food is she on? I know dog foods with soy in them can effect the heat cycle. |
Thank you guys for so many responses... it makes me feel better knowing that maybe there is nothing wrong with her after all... I have her eating Royal Canin for yorkies...it seems like she only likes that food... but I am sooo guilty because she eat table food too. |
table food is a big no no, they will get pickier than they already are when you feed table scraps, plus, they're not good for them. |
I had a 12 lb yorkie seen the 1st heat. But her 2nd heat cycle she didn't even bleed hardly. If you didn't have a boy dog around her you would have missed the heat cycle. That is the only way you knew she was in heat. So she might be one that isn't bleeding, even though the first times she did and you caught it. |
