A little too eager Hey friends, I'm having a minor issue with Widdles. I'm not sure what to do. He's always been a bit frightened of eating with the other dogs, although that has improved tremendously. I'm sure it's from his previous kennel existance where he didn't get to eat freely. Anyway, when I give him a treat, as I do all of them when they come when called, he always lunges for it and sometimes ends up pinching me with an eye tooth. It's not on purpose, and he's never, ever aggressive. I could tie him in knots and he wouldn't even growl. But he's so eager to get his yummy that he lunges and grabs it hard. How can I help him be more gentle? Thanks, Joy |
I used to hold the treat up and say very calmly sit chewy... Until he calmed down and sat. Then I gave the treat.... I do the same when we get the harness out for a walk. |
I have had this issue...I take a treat in my hand and hold him then palm the treat in your fist. Then let him smell for it and gently assure him that he is going to get the treat let him smell your hand and as he licks you hand pull it away slow and start opening your fist.. IF he tries to lunge pull your hand back and make him wait for it.. have him sit still and place your fist back in front of him and let him sniff again.. THEN open your palm and give him the treat. Then repeatbut holding the treat longer.. This worked for me several times .. just like everything eles it just takes time:thumbup: Lana:aimeeyork |
My Chachi will bite you when you hand feed him and My Husband found a way to feed him that he takes the food easier.. He holds the food in his fingers towards him then brings his fingers out so they are at the side of chachis face rather than in front of his face and he takes it easier. Good luck |
Thank you! I actually did try a variation this morning that seemed to help. I held his treat in the palm of my hand. For each of the dogs I did it the same way, and they all gently licked then picked up the goodie. Thanks for all your suggestions! |
