hey we are new to this site, we just got our first pup the other week, we have had him for one week, and he is just over 3 months old, we are having some teething problems at the moment, and were looking for some form of help, we have watched videos and read web sites, and i thought that this would be a better way of doing things as you people obviously love yorkies and can tell us from your experiences what to do :) i just thought i would introduce us as ali doesnt know that i have signed us up for it yet. hehe
our lil pup is called chip, and we love him to bits, we are having a bit of trouble with him snapping at us at the moment, and also potty training :( sometimes he does it sometimes he doesnt :( hopefully some of you can help us out with some tips

yeah sorry, we tried training him outside, but its a bit too cold atm, so we bought some of the toilet training spray, and put it on some newspaper, but he just sniffed it and went elsewhere anyway, adnd we have now started to use a litter tray with cat litter in it, but he still isnt really getting the jist, we have put some more of the spray in the litter, and he went in there for a wee thismorning, but he just keeps going everywhere else :( also we clean it up with disinfectant and ferbreeze, would this hide the smell well enough.

most of the time he is a happy lil pup, but sometimes he just goes nuts and starts biting at the bottom of my jeans, so we make a loud noise or say NO! and he stopps for like a second, and then he starts on again. When we are playing with him, sometimes he gets a bit too excited and starts to bare his teeth at us and get really snappy, sometimes he even goes for the face :( have tried a light tap (nothing hard dont wanna hurt him ), when we say no, but that just seems to wind him up even more, so we stopped it, Ali seems to yelp like a little puppy and that seems to work a bit, but being male my voice is too deep and i cant mimic the sound they make any help to you??

Welcome! Ive never heard of them using cat litter. There is dog litter but it is different than cat litter. However I tried to litter train mine and didnt have any success. I had better luck with a peepad in the litterbox but I ended up outside training them

I am sure that there are more YT members with experiences.. but I thought I would share mine :) And i hope others would share theirs!

In terms of potty training...
I don't know how big your pup is.... but it might be worth it to get a playpen. I had a shower curtain underneath of playpen for any leak!! Then I put one peepad on one side. I left her in the playpen most of the time right next to me. I held her many times of the day for short time each. WHen she peed or pooped, I praised her. If she tried to pee elsewhere, I lift her up and put her on the peepad. WHen I changed to the new pad, I tried to rub the new peepad to old peepad, so there is some smell with new pad. I also took her to outside in warm days and if she pees or poops, I praised her. I think they can smell other dogs' poop and pee, they might have easier time to do it outside. But Haruka had hard time going outside for pee and poop in the beginning and waited for going home to do her business.. But then I decided to take her out very often for long time, she started going outside as well.

I used to dogsit two dogs often. My challenge was that I had to take them out 8 a.m, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. everyday. It didn't matter snow days or rain days.. or stormy days. I just couldn't imagine doing that every day. SO I made sure that Haruka goes to peepad at home as well. It is easy... I just need to pick up the poop with toilet paper and flash! I changed the peepad every other day or so... because she goes outside sometimes too.. Now she doesn't use the playpen unless I have to leave her when I go to work... and she has the peepad outside in two separate rooms... It works so perfectly for me :)

In terms of biting... I think it is important to provide a toy that is helpful for your pup's teething. When she used to bite me, I would give her the hoof or kong. And when she decided to buy them instead, I pad her and said "good girl." When she bit me, I used to tell her "No" and made her to sit down.... She is really a good behaved girl now :) It is not their fault that they are teething.. so we just need to make sure to give them something substitute to bite :) hoof was great for me even it stinks !

yeah thats what i was thinking, by am a student try and economise, how long to do they last, the pee pads that is, the dude in the pet shop said that its pretty much the same thing, but im willing to try anything, we only started him on it yesterday, and he went wee wee thismorning when i got him up, but he keeps trying to eat the gravel, or sleep in it, and with the wee wee spray it just make him smell :( so he has had a few baths, i might nip to the pet shop now and purchase some pee pads :) 2 for £0.99p worth a try i spose thanks for the support, anymore would be greatly appreciated :D

thanks for the tips, we do have toys for him, and thankfully he does like them, we need to get him to learn to sit and stuff, but im thinking maybe we should do that when he has learned to pee properly, i dont know how much he weighs as i was at work when ali took him to the vets for the 1st time, as for the pee pad, once they know how to use them is it easy to wheen them off to something else or wouild it be the pee pads all the time? thanks for the hints :D

Welcome to YT!! It's been a long time since I've had a pup - so I'll let some of the others answer you.

I hope this is ok to do - but another new member today on another thread, asked a similar question to yours about a pup they got - so i'm going to post her answer, because I thought it was good. Not sure how old your pup was when you got him, this other person's was about 8 wks, but I think what Jeanie shares might work for you too.

welcome..I use pee pads, the ones I use are pretty expensive(they are on sale right now) at www.drsfostersmith.com just type in piddle pads ultra..I just bought 4 packs of the 30 instead of the 120, as I did some calculations, and it was actually a little cheaper that way..anyway, when you put him on the pee pads, don't let him off until he goes..Do you own an xpen? If not, you may want to get one of those, you can make it different sizes and put his bed, food, water, toys and pee pads in there..When he does go on the pad, praise him and occasionally give treats..I was never big on giving treats everytime, as then they will go just to get a treat..goodluck
Also you can try a kong (mine never liked them, but a lot of them do), and you put peanut butter down in that, this will give him something to chew on...

Welcome to YT. Yorkie pups are full of energy. One method I have used to stop unwanted behavior, such as the biting at the clothing, barking, etc., is to shake a coffee can with a few coins. This seems to be a cureall for lots of things. My pup went after the vacuum, always on the attack. The coffee can trick has put a stop to this.

Also, I have an Xpen and find that it is a such a help when the pup cannot be supervised.
