HELP! Luna has too many KNOTS! Grrr, Luna is FILLED with mats in her hair! Poor baby can't have her hair combed right because of them, she starts to cry a bit actually! We took her to the groomer but he was really busy and said to come back next week. In the meantime, however, I want to try to comb her hair out a bit. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? I know that what's most important comb her hair everyday with the RIGHT brush. We've tried using fine comb, it hurts her. Then we use one that's made of like black bristles, it doesn't go through the hair. And of course with the mats in her hair, the pin brush hurts her. Thus I need to know exactly what brush to use and how to comb her hair...pictures of the brush would be lovely! :P Any suggestions are warming welcomed! Thanks all! |
if you get a regular human bristle crush and coat the mats REALLY GOOD with conditioner then the mats should be easier to get out |
When Bentley has knots I soak the knot with spray-on conditioner (found at any pet store) and then slowly comb the knot out. Put your fingers between the knot and the puppy's skin so it doesn't hurt as much. |
I first bought all the "pin" brushes, etc. which just didn't seem to work without hurting Toto. I had an old boar bristle, round brush that I used on my hair probably 20-25 years ago and it works wonderfully! I also had a "detangler" comb from the "old days". I spray Toto with Coat Handlers Detangler as I brush and work the mats out and it helps with breakage too. Also, the Bless the Beast Detangler shampoo helps with mats and keeps it from getting so many. Hope that helps a little. ;) |
Just got throught bathing my two. Maddie is a breeze, she lets you do anything to her and her hair doesn't mat. Rudy is a whole other story, he loves the bath but blow drying and brushing. It's like wrestling a 300 lb tiger. He mats easy and has a full coat. He get mats bad around his upper legs, I have tried every kind of brush and comb. What works best on him is the pin brush without the balls on the end. What type of hair does she have? That has a lot to do with what brush or comb will be good for her. For Maddie I use a boar brush like Toto's mom, but that type of brush won't go through Rudy's hair. Maybe your breeder can help tell you her hair type and what brush will be good for her. Tiko can get lots of matting if I don't brush and comb him every day. I use a bristle brush and a mustache comb. It works pretty good. I always use Good-by Tangles by Fourpaws before bathing and Fourpaws conditioner. They leave his hair very shiny and soft and help to keep him from matting. When he has a lot of mats I usually give him short breaks in between and a few treats. |
Maddie -Rudy-Mom! I know what you mean! My littale one is a tiger when we do something she doesn't want to do. Yesterday my husband held her down while I cut her nails! He could hardly hold her. He just can't believe a 3# dog can have so much strength. She lets me bath her, brush her teeth, brush her back, just recently, put in a bow----but get a hair brush by her legs etc.etc. or take a sissors or nail clipper out and she turns into " CUJO". Just amazing! I guess I am really lulcky she lets me brush her teeth seeing as they have so much trouble with tartar build-up. I also give her Petrodix sticks for it and Greenies. So far, she is shiny white. She will be a year old the 28th of Jan. Pat |
Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions!! Luna's back is now mat free... her belly, neck, and part of her legs are still matted. It took me forever to take the mats off her back and when I started to work on her belly she seemed to be in pain, so I stopped. I guess they are more sensitive in their belly area because when I tried getting her mats off her back she really didn't mind. I'm going to try and work with her belly today, hopefully it won't hurt her too much. I think we're going to take her to the groomers tomorrow or thursday, so if I can't get them out today, I'm sure the groomer will have a load of fun with the mats. hehe!! :p BTW, what I used was dog conditioner, water in a spray bottle, and a fine comb (like the flea comb). After soaking the mats individually, I would slowly try taking them out with the comb, of course holding tight to the hair in between the body and the mat so that I don't yank them out and hurt her. I have definately learned a lesson here, COMB YOUR DOG'S HAIR EVERYDAY MELISSA!!! lol Thanks again!! |
we found out that when Bradley Knots up we use a ConAir round brush, it doesnt seem to hurt him and it gets the knots out |
Just the other day I gave Bell a bath and I was tired and never brushed her. The next day her matts were so bad that I had to shave her beautiful hair. She has a soft coat and I find it difficult to keep it matt free, When I do comb her the poor baby looses a lot of hair. Any suggestions on a soft coat?? And one more question, Has anyone ever mated a soft coat with a regular coat ? Whats the out come? and can you tell when they are babies what their coat will be like. Bell is my first yorkie and I would like to know what to look for when I get a second. Thanks |
