My puppy doesn't recognize her name We have now had my puppy for 2 weeks. We named her Princess and the vet and a few people said it only takes a few days to a week for her to recognize her name. How long did it take your pups to recognize their names? Sometimes she comes other times I will be yelling Princess and she won't even turn her head. My mom thinks she is hard of hearing, but she hears even the lightest noises and reacts to them so I know that isn't it. Could it be that she knows her name and just ignores us when she feels like it? Does anyone else have this problem? Ughhh will she ever know her name and how long did it take you guys? Thanks soo much for your help everyone! :aimeeyork |
Selective hearing is a yorkie trait!! :D |

No kidding. I have had Linus for 3 months and sometimes he likes to pretend that he doesn't know his... |
With Annie my huband and I would just throw out different names and use the same tone of voice and she would still come for months. We haven't tried that trick in months .... But she does respond to ANNIE! |
Don't overuse her name - only call her with her name if you want her to give you attention. What you need to know is - dogs don't use names - they don't understand the meaning of a "name". Their name should be used to get their attention. If she is already at your side and you want her looking at you because you want to make her sit, lay down or whatever, use her name. (And don't forget to praise and treat) If you need to call her to you, train her with a different word. Say "here" when she is close to you and if she looks at you praise her and give her a treat. Do this a lot of times during a few days. (Do NOT walk up to her and do this, she has to be near you already) Then when she is a little further away, say "here" and if she comes towards you praise her but do not give her the treat before she is right in front of you :) The trick about training is to ONLY give the dog the treat when they are doing the right thing, not when they are almost doing it. IE "sit" must only be rewarded when the dog is actually sitting, and it is not allowed to get up because it gets a treat. But that's another story. Another thing which is a very good leader exercise (ok, I'll give you 2) 1. Be the only person in the house or the garden and then hide from her. Do not look at her, call her, say anything or give her chance to find you without looking for you. She WILL look for you trust me - it may take some time but she will. When she finds you give her the treat and praise her. Do this a few times every day and soon she will have learned that she needs to look after you and not the other way around. You won't have to look so much out for her because she will never loose you of sight. 2. Go into the garden, spread some doggie food on the ground, let her out, go to the doggie food, point at it and go "Uhmmmm, good food" Make chewing noises. Do not call her or anything, just keep doing chewing noises and saying uhmmm until she comes and sees that you, her leader has found food for her. You are her hero. She will never leave your side, because you are a good provider :) Do these exercises regularly the first year of her life and you will have a faithful attentive dog for the rest of her life :) Good luck! |
Great tips on the leader exercises Mette! You explained the how & why very well. Do you have any more training tips??? You could write a book & sell it on the Internet! I'd love to learn more tips. |
Thanks for the roses :) I have lots and lot - but actually I think there's tons of great tips on the net - all for free :) |
The thins about Yorkies is we all know they only come when they want to - no matter how much training we give - learn to live with it. But there are some things we can do to make it better. The above exercises are part of that. Here is another great exercise: Sit in front of the dog with a treat in your hand. The dog will sniff your hand. Do not react and do not give the dog the treat. Do not move your hand. When it looks into your eyes smile, praise and give treat. This way you will teach your dog that having eyecontact is a good thing and he will be a lot more willing to give you attention when you need it. |
When my girls don't listen to me - I just call out "SURPRISE" ! ...you'd be surprised how fast they come running :D |
Cookie works well for me:) |

Our trainer at PetSmart told us to teach Gracie her name. She said that when we are in a room together to just call out her name. If she looked at me, I was to get up and give her a treat. If she did not look at me, no treat. It took only a very few times and she knew her name. Hope that helps. |
It took Sailor a long time to figure out what her name was...she used to come to us anytime we would say anything to here, it was so funny...and then for a while she thought her name was Magic and would only respond to Magic's name...it was fustrating for a while, but over time she figured out that her name was Sailor and now she loves it when you say her name!!! |
When Jane was a puppy. She easily learned her name in like 1 week. But Jeremiah is was harder because I didn't get him when he was a puppy puppy like at 8 weeks-2 months or anything like that. But I got him at 5 months. He is 7 months now. But his breeder called all of her yorkies " Max" so they would all come. Which was very smart but he only didn't really have a name so I started to call him Jeremiah when I wanted his attention. He didn't come at first but I bribed hin with treats when I called his name his noticed the treat and came after a while he got used to it. So I started to not use the treats. He is still getting used to his name. When I call it he looks at me and sometimes comes but aleast I think he knows his name. |
Lots of great suggestions!! I also try to never use their names when I scold. Which is usually a low "no" while looking them in the eye. Selective hearing is part of the terrier in them I swear. lol |
