How to Make a Topknot Here is a good article on making topknots! Got to the end to see how it is done at my house! 1. Start with clean hair and brushed. 2. Part the hair on head, in a triangle, starting from the corner of the eyes to the top of the head. Different people do different things! 3. Take styling gel and put on the top knot, tease, now take a complexion brush or tooth brush and smooth top layer of hairs. 4. Take the hair in your hand and put the rubber band about a half inch to an inch away from head. 5. In the ponytail, make alittle palm tree, in the center of the palm tree take a small piece of hair out of the center. Pull it as sliding down rubber band. You should have a puff now. You can take a rat tail comb, and puff it out more with the sharp end. 6. Smooth out wild hairs with a tooth brush or complex- ion brush. 7. Now insert Bow. 8. Tease the pony tail and smooth the hair on the top layer. Fold over making a loop. 9. Hold loop and put a rubber band around it. 10. Next fan out loop. 11. There I think you are done. How does it look? 12. Remember Practice makes Perfect. This is not an easy thing to do. So Practice, Practice, Practice. 1. Start with clean hair and brushed. (This is accomplished after chasing your Yorkie for about 15 minutes and dragging her from behind the sofa by one leg, immersing her in tepid water and shampooing her and myself all at the same time!) 2. Part the hair on head, in a triangle, starting from the corner of the eyes to the top of the head. Different people do different things! (take your Yorkie's head between your knees and hang on! Maybe you'll get a good part on the 15th attempt!) 3. Take styling gel and put on the top knot, tease, now take a complexion brush or tooth brush and smooth top layer of hairs. (If you can't find the styling gel and your squirmy Yorkie is doing everything imaginable to get loose, just spit on your fingers! Hey! It was good enough for MY mother!) 4. Take the hair in your hand and put the rubber band about a half inch to an inch away from head. (If you're lucky, you'll still have fingers attached by this stage. Check your Yorkie at this point to see if she has gone slant-eyed at this point. If so, loosen the rubber band! Most of the time it breaks at this step, so while sucking on your sore finger from the rubber band snap, try to save that parted hair and get another band in quickly! Remember, a little spit works wonders!) 5. In the ponytail, make alittle palm tree, in the center of the palm tree take a small piece of hair out of the center. Pull it as sliding down rubber band. You should have a puff now. You can take a rat tail comb, and puff it out more with the sharp end. (A little palm tree???? Give me a break......) 6. Smooth out wild hairs with a tooth brush or complex- ion brush. ( This occurs after your Yorkie has attacked the toothbrush with the misunderstanding that you are going to torture her some more by brushing her teeth at this point.) 7. Now insert Bow. (if you can get them in right side up and not tilted, I really don't want to hear about it!) 8. Tease the pony tail and smooth the hair on the top layer. Fold over making a loop. (By now, you and your Yorkie are not on speaking terms anyway, so what the heck! If a loop is what you want, go for it!) 9. Hold loop and put a rubber band around it. (Careful here! Your finger is still stinging from the first rubber band attempt!) 10. Next fan out loop. (This step may be omitted since your Yorkie is going to pull it in every directions the instant you set her down anyway.) 11. There I think you are done. How does it look? (Well...not exactly like the photos of the show dogs......) 12. Remember Practice makes Perfect. This is not an easy thing to do. So Practice, Practice, Practice. (Or you could just give them a couple of Valium and get it right the first time!) This was intended to be funny. DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG VALIUM! |
1 Attachment(s) I have a great photo to along with it. Actually it's differnet from a top knot but great for placing a bow with a pneytail. |

Elizabeth: You bathe? You part? You are so ahead of the curve. i just grab a clump of hair and hope for the best. Your description was pretty funny though, i especially liked the valium part, for me though... |
In reality I just grab a clump too! :D |
That is too funny. I just grab a clump of hair too. lol |
You are too funny! By the time you put this bow in one is exhausted! |
Thanks for the chuckle to go with my coffee....I usually start the topknot process with a 'Let the games begin!' |

and If I feel really creative - we braid - One day Chanel is gonna have 100 braids all over her head and do her own version of the movie "10"....The move will be called "FIVE" on account of her size. |
I knew there was some reason I keep Maggie in a Puppy Cut. :D |
I personally dislike putting in topknots greatly!!! But when you are involved with showing it is part of it.. I ordered a grooming tape off of SweetyBlues for topknots and the different ages and kinds of topknots.. While I was grooming Tegan at one of the shows another yorkies showbreeder that lives right out my backdoor said what in the world is on top of his head, LOL!! He sat down and cut out the 5-10 bands I had in this poor boys topknot and put one band in pulled down alittle and said there you go! I honestly had just spent over 1 hour trying to put in Tegan's topknot and in two minutes he was down and it looked gorgeous! :p Melanie |
Where's a hankie??? I need a hankie to dab at my eyes...this is the funniest thread I've ever read. On top of that, I put a real bow in my little girl's hair this morning and with one shake she flung (is that a word?) it out! Grrrr. I guess my dog's hair isn't as long as the rest of yours'. I can only get one rubberband in it (from Claire's, baby latex bands) and then it looks like a fountain!! Really!!! And I think it sprung a leak because all the hairs aren't the same length!! I will NEVER get the hang of this! |
