Walking your pups Do your babies beg to be picked up shortly after starting a walk? I go very slowly for Guinness' short legs and let him investigate things, but so far we've only gone about 8 houses down and before we even turn around he's wanting to be carried. Little toot. It's so cute though because during our walk he is looking up at me and I encourage him telling him he's doing a great job, etc. I'm working on getting him to walk beside me and not weave in and out of my legs, I'm so worried I'll trip on him. I put some resistance on his leash (no collar on him) and just try to sort of steer him. Are there any pointers I need during these walks? Thanks :animal-pa |

Aw that's too cute. I think he really likes the walks, too. He loves to explore and stops in his tracks to watch the cars go by. |
How old is your baby? I know that Millie would not/could not walk very far at all until she got to be about 8-9mons old. I did not think she would ever really walk very far, but now she can walk about 1 1/2 miles and do just fine. :) |
Oh he's only 13 weeks old. I'm probably going to keep doing the short distance and carry him part of the way home, then explore the front yard. he was scared to walk into the house the first time, but last night he ran right in, he knows it's 'his' home :) |
Wow..13 weeks! I could never get Piper to walk at that age. We'd put the harness and leash on and take her out and she'd lie flat on the sidewalk and not move. We tried the harness and leash inside, thinking it was scary outside for a little pup, but got the same reaction. It wasn't until she was 5 months old that she saw a leaf blow by and decided to go after it...and just up and walked like a champ. Now we do some pretty long walks and she is SO much calmer inside! She loves her walks, but I was so sure she would never get the hang of it. She's 7 months old now, so I think your little one is way ahead of the game! |
He really did well with it. My cocker took forever to want to take walks, she still pulls on the leash and hacks and she's 14 yrs old! He is very comfortable. He's definitely a mama's boy as he has to be right next to me all the time. I'm pretty used to that as so are both of my little boys LMAO |
Max was like that when he was a baby too! It took awhile before he was ok with the leash being on him; he kept stopping and looking behind him to see what was on his back, LOL. And I felt so guilty b/c I felt like I was doing something that scared him:( . But we both got thru our "leash anxiety";) , and now he LOVES to walk. At first, I had a fairly short leash so it wouldn't lie on his back; that's what seemed to scare him. |
Maxwell is a year now and loves walks. But when he decides it's far enough, he will sit. I have to carry him until he sees we have made the turn towards home, THEN he'll walk again. He's a clever boy, has me trained. |
