Does anyone have experience with a Dog Door.... I recently bought one, but I am not sure if it is a good idea. I can think of a million positives and negatives. I have a dog sitter come to the house 3 times a day when I am away to take care of my dogs, but I still feel awful keeping them in the house all day. I have 2 Yorkies, a Golden, and a Sheltie. They like to play outside, and we have an acre of land. I am thinking of fencing off 1/2 of it, and giving them the front yard to play, and go in and out as they want, and still having the dog sitter come 3 times a day. I would have the dog door locked at night, so no one or no thing can come in at night. Does anyone have experience with this? I am a bit nervous, that they will go out in the rain, get all muddy, and then come in the house, and wipe it all over my house. Like if no one is here to stop them..... So if anyone has any experience with it, I would love to hear it! |
I had a doggy dog going from my backyard to my garage for my big dogs. The garage was heated and they had a couch in there to lay on. They would go in the garage to dry off before coming into the house. I never had a problem with other animals using in (skunks, mice, etc.) I have thought of putting one in my new house but like you, I worry that they will go out in the snow and rain and come back in all wet and muddy. I am still considering it, if I can figure out a way to block off a portion for them to stay in immediately after coming in. |
We have a doggy door but of course the only time we have it available for them to use it is ONLY when we are home! I would never allow my yorkies to have access to the outside without me being home! I live in a good neighborhood and our yard is rather small and fenced in and good neighbors but I still would never allow them access to outside unless I was home! Ya know....I've never let my dogs out when i am not home either. I do live on a dead-end dirt road though, with only 6 houses on my block. I don't really think the yorkies will STAY out as long as my Sheltie would. I think they would just go potty, and come back in....maybe stay out for 10 to 15 min, as that is the only amount of time they usually like to spend outside anyways. I would not allow them access to outside at night, just during day time hours, and I COULD build a smaller yard for them, instead of giving them access to 1/2 the yard. Are you afraid of someone taking them? If I built a smaller yard, within the bigger yard, it would be towards the back of my house, and it would be DOUBLE fenced, because I currently have a fence on my acre, and then it would be a smaller fenced area, I don't think anyone would even SEE my dogs. |
i have been thinking about a doggie door also i do know that i would not let them use it if i werent home mostly because i dont want other wild animals getting at my dogs. birds cyoties ect.... we had one dig under the fence and i wont take that chance. but the doggie door would be awsome when i am home ( and thats most of the time) with 5 dogs it would be nice to not jump up every 5 minuts to let one in or out. |
door Same here, ours goes from the kitchen to the garage. When were not home they can go into the garage on the pads to pee. When were home the outer door is open to give them access to the side of the house, where its all cement. They only get to go out in the back yard grass area when we take them. I dont trust anyone these days, and my heart would break if they got hurt or someone snatched them. |
Even tho my yard is fenced I still wouldn't let them have access outside without me being home. I know I"ve accidently shut one outside and nothing happened but again I wouldn't risk it! My husband only works a mile from the house and he comes home at lunch time to let them out so that helps! Again, I just wouldn't risk it with these little guys! The doggy door is GREAT when I'm home! They are always running in and out! Great for when they have to go potty and just go out the door! Donna |
We have four doggies and have it fenced off so that they can only go about 10 feet outside the door. It works out good so they can potty outside safely under the patio. It would be better if they could go in the yard but it is not safe unless I am home to watch them. Years ago, my daughter had a cat that learned to use the doggie door on her own. We never taught her. Unfortunately, she went out and never made it back. I think the doggie door is fine for the bigger dogs but for the small ones they should be supervised. There are just too many things that can happen. Hope this helps. |
