Sarcoptic Mange Hi, this is the BEST site in the world. I am so happy I found it. I wanted to thank everyone for all your advice and help. I bought my yorkie , Chloe , from a pet shop. I guess the more I think about it, I should have found a breeder. Then again things can happen in either situation. When you get a dog from the breeder do they always give the new owner a "dog pedigree" paper work on the dog? Should I request the papers of my dog too from the pet shop? Here is the problem  Chloe came home with mange. I did not know. A few days later she was diagnosed. I got Chloe on June 3 (at that time she was 9 weeks). She is now 15 weeks. She has not been able to get rid of the mange. The vet has already given her 3 shots and we go back in 8 days to get a fourth shot. I am so bothered. It's such hassle! If you have had to deal with this problem please help me with advice because I am ready to loose my mind. What do I need to do? What should I not do? She is so cute and I feel so bad for her because I keep her in her crate most of the time. I walk her for a while and play with her too. Also, her coat is becoming very tangled and dry. Could it be the ivermectin? Is this going to cause defects in the long run (medicine) ? I know I have alot of questions, if you can answer atleast one I would really appreciate it. Regards, Gigi Mommy of :aimeeyork Chloe :aimeeyork |

Hi, this mange thing can be miserable. I brought in a puppy with it and I ended up treating everyone to be safe. I can tell you that it was like somebody said poison oak. Every time I thought about it I looked like the bear in the woods rubbing my butt on the door facings. I was sure them little mange mite critters were on me.. So, as for treatment. Ivermectin did the trick BUT we gave oral med that was very puppy/dog specific in its dosage calculation. Every dog had a different dose and they received it for 6 weeks. Now, remember all of them did NOT have it, but as with ear mites, every dog should be treated. If this is indeed sarcoptic mange and not demodactic, a prolonged series of Ivermectin should handle it. In live stock, Ivermectin is used as a topical prep as well as taken internally. I will look in my Merck vet manual and Vet's desk reference for suggestions, meds and dosage. DDon't panic.. you baby will get better. our vet might refer you to a dermatologist for a secong opinion. I am very lucky. In my vet's practice there are many vets each with a different speciality.. Would you post a couple of pics of your baby as close-up as possible?? |
What about Revolution? Doesn't it treat sarcoptic mange? Elizabeth |
I have never heard of treating sarcoptic mange with Revival.. Gonna check now..Vet Merck man. says Selamectin can be used for treatment of mites The doseage of Ivermectin for mites including ear and mange mites..is 200mcg perkg of weight 2 times at 2 week intervals. Didn't see the same meds in thiese books. I am probably overlooking them.. Of course, lime baths are used occasionally.. |
Mange and treatment My boys had sarcoptic mange when I got them too. They had a skin scraping to confirm it. Then they each got a medicated bath, antibiotics and were immediately put on Revolution which kills the mites that cause the mange. They had to return to the vet two weeks later for another skin scraping to confirm that the mites were dead, they were. They have been on Revolution now for over a year and not had a recurrence. For anyone's info, Revolution is a one dose per month topical (back of the neck) medication that kills fleas, ticks, mites, sarcoptic mange and heartworm all in one monthly dose, it costs approximately $10 a month per dog. I swear by it. |
What are the symtoms? |

Poor puppy, I hope he gets better soon. I hate itching more than anything. You might get him a shorter haircut until all better. |
WhispersMom, Thank you for replying. Her mange is still there but it's not that serious I think. It's only near the ear tip and on her side. I am trying my hardest to keep everything clean and disinfected. Let me know what else you know to help me out. This has been horrible. Gigi, Chloe's Mom |
