Jen Saved us from a ..... Racoon! Last night while we were all cozy in bed, ready to go to sleep, when Jen jumps up and off the bed to the sliding patio door like a possessed Yorkie barking her head off. Jazzie and Jolie started barking too. But Jen was being relentless and it was her "Big Dog" bark all mean and ferocious. Jolie and Jazzie had the "We don't know what were barking at" voices. So I grabbed the flashlight and went to see what she was barking at and of course mommy with her limited human hearing and eyesight couldn't see a thing. But Jen wouldn't stop, kept barking and trying to open the slider. It was raining and cold so I climbed back in bed to watch Jen. All of a sudden she jumped and ran back from the glass barking like nuts! Then I saw a shadow crossing the patio so I hopped back out of bed and gads! There's a HUGE Racoon on the patio! How Jen heard it is a miracle to me with the heavy rainfall and all. This is only the 2nd time I have ever seen a racoon in my condo complex in 5 years. Needless to say - We were all up until about 2 AM while Jen was "On Alert" and protecting her family. Meanwhile Jazzie and Jolie were clueless to what all the fuss was about. |
Awe Good Job Jen!. I have heard of all that Rain you all are getting . I am sure that Coon was just looking for a dry spot or maybe a Garbage can to Munch on the leftovers. We have all kinds of Wild Creatures out here. Ours Love to Try to protect the yard... The little Tiny Finch birds are the Biggest Trespassers. |
Jen......you go, girl! Good job, sweetie! They are fearless, aren't they? Abigail was on possom alert all summer. There was one in my laundry hamper  , and my sister nearly pulled it out with the clothes! After that, no one could open the laundry room door (off a bath) without Abigail high-tailing it in there to sniff her "OK". We had quite a wild life summer here in our urban neighborhood. Oppossom, raccoons, and a rabid fox! It's because we're building up their habitat for houses no one can afford to live in :( |
Yay Jen! |
Good job Jen! |
Aww how cute! My pups have become such barkers since we moved to the ground floor of our complex. I know I know, they just want us to be safe! Yay Jen! |
Way to Go Jen......The protector of the family..... :animal36 |
Good job, Jen! I say we change the spelling to Gen, as in The General! Eddie says he knows that bark well. It's the one he uses on moose. |
awwww poor mommy! At least you had your girl there to save you! (and keep the family awake for any 'just in case's'). |
What a good girl ! We live deep in the country and there is always something wild traveling by. and our little furbutts seem to know which ones we might want to know about it. LOL It makes for a very restless night sometimes, especially during a full moon. |

You probably already know this, and I saw that your doggie didn't go out, but just in case (b/c I had no idea til about a month or so ago)...raccoons can kill a dog:eek: . I mean, I knew they could be mean and aggressive and possibly hurt a small dog, but we were going to a concert awhile back and my friends were here from Washington and their son called up (he's got a Jack Russell who isn't exceptionally bright I guess) terrified that his dog had been killed by a raccoon under the house when he ran under after one....about an hour or so later, he called his parents back and had found the dog, unharmed but another friend who was with us said that she hadn't wanted to say anything at the time, but her friend's dog had just recently been killed by one. I know that if Max was out and one came around, he'd be beside himself trying to go after it (like it sounds like your Jen was), so I try to make sure I see whatever it is outside (we've got bunnies) before I let him out. Scary! But they ARE good little watchdogs, aren't they??? |
WTG Jen!! :D |
This is a fear of ours even though we take them outside ourselves to keep an eye on them. We have a skunk, opossum and raccoon that scout our yard pretty often. Raccoons can tear into a metal cage and kill rabbits, chickens or anything else that's in those cages. They are also fearless. My husband went out on the patio, stomped his feet and yelled at a raccoon only to have the thing turn and walk sideways back toward my husband. He jumped back inside. Please be extra careful, especially at night. |
