thank you fellow yorkie owners i got a yorkie anticipating everything would be exactly like it had been when i trained my other dogs in teh past (golden retreiver adn cairn terrier)... its been 8 years since i had a PUPPY and i had forgotten how much patience it takes to train the little rascals........ its funny how when they FINALLY start to settle down, adn they are WONDERFULLY trained, they reach their twilight years and go over the rainbow bridge, then ....... you either move on or start all over again with another pup (which is what i did, but your memory fades after time on how to deal with the puppy stage) I just wanted to thank everyone on here for their wonderful ideas and comments, i dont know what i would have done if this forum didnt exist  .... Due to the wonderful advice, toby is advancing well in his potty training, and he learned how to sit, stay, come, lay down, roll over, and beg (all in one day!!!! which i thought was amazing).... we are still working on shake, adn im thinking about teaching him "play dead" just to keep him entertained and challenged.... So thanks again for all the advice and help :D |
What technique did you use to teach him to come? |
i really just call his name and he comes i eventually want to get him to come when i whistle, because thats how i called my other dog.... i use hand signals for sit and roll over and stay..... beg he just sorta did on his own..... i was amazed at how fast he learned..... it actually took less than a day, he pretty much learned the first time i taught him and did them perfectly after that :D hope he STAYS learning at that pace |
Toby All mine start out on their best behavior for a few months..then suddenly they turn into Yorkies around 4 or 5 months..which means they become very self willed and do as they please until about 18 months..then they seem to mature and behave well again. Toby is a smart boy. |
Like YorkieRose said my two were angels when they were little, then they turn into little brats. Maddie will be two in Feb and she is back to being an angel. Rudy was a year in Nov. and he a little yorkie terrorist. I know some of it might be my fault but he is bad, not mean bad but, just all yorkie. Maddie and Lucky look at me sometimes like saying do something he is bothering me. He keep us entertained......................Cindy |
i have heard these stories before, and i am HOPING that toby stays a little angel ......... but......... he allready has teh little terror personality so i think i will have to just hope harder :p |
Has Toby done well when there are distractions around? Bentley does well with most commands (except come - he hasn't mastered that one yet), except when other dogs are around, then he is busy playing and acts like he is deaf. Hope your angel does better! |
it depends on if i sound stern or not........... usually he does ok, (i put him to the test today when he was at my moms house) even when he was playing with the other three "big dogs" he came when i called, he still needs work, but learning all that in a period of 15-20 minuits isnt bad  |
Toby I know we all love our girls..but the truth about Yorkies is, the males are the best companions. They seem to have an extra dose of the "sweet" gene. I have owned many of each sex and the boys win hands down. |
thats interesting that you say that, because i was initially looking for a female!, ive only owned female dogs in my life (ept my cairn terrier who was male......... and a little jerk :p) toby was more or less only here because males are cheaper than females :D but im happy with my decision...... he hasnt coughed once last night (maybe his kennel cough is FINALLY gone :p ) |
I taught my Yorkie the same things in less than a week. I am having trouble with the Come command when she doesn't want to. If I am in the yard and want to go in, I yell come and she runs like a rabbit to me. But, if the dog next door lis out, forget it! Any suggestions? I Don't keep yelling---only say it a couple of times---then go get her and tell her bad dog! Pat |
toby knows that if he doesnt come when i say........ he will get ignored..... and i will leave him behind....... He didnt come when i called when i was at my moms house, so i left him and did my errands alone..... since then i havent had any trouble |
Great Orinskye! I just want mine to come each and every time. Lately, she will stop what she is doing though and stay in that same spot. LIttle bggers! Pat |
