Need lots of advice on Yorkies please???
 

Im new to all this and im thinking about buying a small Yorkshire Terrier and im going to be honest i know nothing about them what so ever so im really on here to get as much info on them as possible. I really like the tiny ones some people on there adverts call them "teapot" or "miniture" but i've just read on here someone saying avoid them, can anyone tell me why and also i see the people selling these tiny ones say they come disease free, what does that mean aswell?? I really want to own a dog but need to find out so much about what im gong to take on. What do they eat, how much exercise do they need, can someone give me as much info as possible. i've only had Yorkies for about 2 years...I came here and started reaading...there is a wealth of information and experience here. Also, i checked out library books, and i happen to have two friends that have yorkies (one is my hubby's client, and that's how I started my journey toward yorkie ownership!)

Just steer away from the tinies....they are so fragile, and honestly, a standard sized 5-6 lb yorkie is really small anyway. Sometimes I'm amazed at Phoebe's smallness, and she's 5 lbs 4 oz.

We have a seven pounder, and she is still small by most standards. By that I mean our family's dogs. Everyone else in our family has dogs that are 15 to 60 pounds. So ours is the odd man out. This makes it somewhat harder as she gets nervous around the larger dogs. She will either become aggressive or she will go to the bedroom and "hide out". Then she doesn't eat if the other dogs are around. This happened over Christmas when my daughter and her finance brought their two approx. 40 pounders to visit from Minnesota. I really love the breed, and I am totally bonkers over ours (she is now 6 1/2), but I am glad she is slightly larger. Welcome, and best of luck with your baby!

You are to be commended for taking the time to research the breed before purchasing. That way you will be thoroughly prepared for your new little one. My 6 Yorkies range in size from a chunky 8 lbs. to 3.5 lbs. They are all healthy and happy. If you want a small Yorkie, there are many out there that are healthy and well adjusted. Just be cautious and stay away from anyone who advertised "tiny" cause quite often they charge extra for a Yorkie being extra small. Be sure that you have a good solid contract that gives you 24 to 48 hours to do a checkup and have a thorough exam by a vet well versed with Yorkies as soon as possible within the time specified in your contract.

I would recommend that you visit as many breeders as possible and look at as many pups as you can before making a decision. Look at the facilities, the parents, and the breeder. If you have a bad feeling, then keep looking there was a reason you didn't feel comfortable.

As far as food goes, there are several superpremium dog foods on the market. I prefer Canidae All Life Stages. But there are others that are excellent as well - Life's Abundance and Innova are also excellent. Be a label reader and do research on the food you select to be sure you are providing the best possible nutrition.

Be sure to select several interactive toys that will keep your Yorkie's mind active. This is a very intelligent breed and they get bored easily. A bored Yorkie = Trouble :D

Welcome to yt. Murfee is my first yorkie. He is 5 lbs of cuteness. I will admit that I didn't know a thing about yorkies. He was a gift from my son and dil and they also knew nothing when they bought him for my. Fortunately we lucked out and he has been healthy. These wonderful people on this forum have taught my so much. Good luck in your search for the perfect baby.

I got my first one and then joined YT and although I have no regrets getting my Tiger I think coming in to this forum right before you get your yorkie is a good thing . . I am first to admit I like them smaller because I myself am very petite and I want to make sure I am carrying them. But my definition of "tiny" certainly is not really tiny. I have a 7 pounder which I can barely carry :p and a five pounder and both are in perfect health. Can't wait to see pictures when you finally take the plunge and find the perfect one.

Because there is no such thing as a 'teacup' or 'toy' or 'miniature' or any other of a multitude of cusey terms that you will hear. There are Yorkies, the breed itself is classified as part of the Toy group as per AKC. When you hear someone claiming otherwise, they are advertising based on a mistruth, generally in an attempt to fool the unsuspecting buyer into thinking they are getting something special when in fact they are not. That being said, it is not advisable to deal with uninformed, misleading and outright dishonest breeders. And please be aware to be cautious of anyone who contacts YOU bombarding you with claims of "Oh I have a tiny pup who is just what you are looking for." Don't be rushed or pressured into any decision.

You have come to a great place to learn all about Yorkies. There is far to much information to be able to just 'tell you everything,' I'm afraid. I commend you on doing your research FIRST--it will save you alot of heartache and you will be making a much more informed decision. Like I said, take your time to gather information and search for the perfect dog for you and breeder that you are comfortable with. Read up here as every topic will give you information you never knew you never knew.:p Ask specifics when they come to mind and in no time you'll have friendly, helpful answers to aid you on your mission.
