newbie with questions
 

Hi to all. I have just joined after reviewing the site several times. I first visited when my dear Gizmo was ill looking for possible answers. Unfortunately it was cancer and he passed in Sept. Well my husband got me a new guy for Christmas who is 16 months old and only 3.5# which scares me to death that I will hurt him. Gizmo would put him to shame as he tipped the scales at over 9#!!! First thing I need to do is fatten him up but he doesn't seem to like any food that I've tried. After reading other posts here I went with a dry food that has no by products or gluten (Nutro Natural Food) and a wet food with no by products. Hopefully he will start to gain some weight.
I have read here that the smaller dogs can have different health problems and concerns. My question is Topper has very unusual smelling urine not that I am in the habit of sniffing urine but his stomach smells after he goes and it has a burnt odor. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I read today that different dogs different odors but wow he smells. I have trimmed his stomach hair and it reduced the retention of the odor. This little guy is incredibly hairy.
Any suggestions on fattening him up and curing this odor issue would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on the new furboy in your life. :) I love his name! I really don't have much advice, but wanted to welcome you to YT.

Welcome. My little Murfee smells if he goes more than a couple of days without a bath....that is his tummy smells. I try to keep his hair trimmed and that does seem to help. In fact he got a trim after his bath today.

I have mine on the nutro natural, and they all love it..I would free feed him, that's what I do with mine, well, up until 5:00, that's when I pull the food up.
I would also buy some doggie wipes to clean around his little penis area, that will probably help with the smell..too many baths are not good, and will dry out their hair, as you wash out the natural oils. Good luck with your baby, can't wait to see pictures

I feed mine California natural dry and some canned in the evening. My guy is not little, he entered TeaPot status at 6 months of age:D . Anyway he sometimes gets a little smelly under his belly so I keep his belly shaved and wipe him of with a newborn baby wipe when he pottys. I will also use the wipe on his arms because sometimes when he pees he will get them wet. Hope this helps.

Welcome! I can't wait to see pictures of you new boy! I wipe my Jeter off with a baby wipe, they are cheeper and I feel if they are safe to use on my kids, then they are safe for Jeter too! I also keep him trimmed up on his belly and his little bum.

I use baby wipes every time I bring Remi in from his walk. I wipe him down and then use another cloth to clean his paws too!

While wiping Topper may help with the immediate odor, it sounds like you are concerned about the smell of the urine - which I know nothing about. I'm wondering if that is the smell he has always had or if it's recent, or something you noticed with changing foods? I would consult your vet, if you are afraid it might indicate something is wrong within his system.
