housebreaking problem We have a little problem that has turn into a big problem. On Monday Sal will be 12 weeks old. During the day he tries to go outside to pee or #2. Our problem is at night he pees and #2 on the carpet instead of the pee pad. This become a regular problem and tonight my husband was so upset about Sal peeing twice on the carpet within 15 minutes apart. I did take him out just about 5 minutes before. What should we do? I am worried that he will never be housebroken.:cry8: |

He is awfully young to expect him to be fully housebroken. It takes time and a lot of effort. If you don't want to crate him at night so he learns to hold it, get an expen for him. Expens are great to keep them safe while you are away from home anyway. Put him, his bed, and a potty pad in the expen. (cover any carpet in his area with a protective cover...like a shower curtain or plastic tablecloth) If you catch him going potty on the pad, give him a treat and tell him how wonderful he is. Eventually, when you see him using it all the time, remove the expen and he will still go to the same spot. It works! But may take a couple of months to sink in completely. good luck |
It is going to be a good while before you baby is housebroken. It definitely takes time and patience. I would suggest going out ever 30 minutes or so with him and be sure to reward and praise the hell out of him when he does good. Eventually as he gets bigger he will do better about holding it. Get a good cleaner to remove any smells or stains from the carpet. You need to clean it good so they dont' get that smell or it's a wrap and they will always do it. I used natures miracle, and I also got to a point where I was using a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Good luck and take a deep breath. Also for now if he loves him some rugs and they are only throw rugs you can pick them up. |

12 weeks is still very young, I would put him in a small crate at night with just enough room for him to stand up and turn around. Most dogs will not mess in their bed. Also put the crate right next to your bed so he's close to you, this will make him feel more secure. Don't get discouraged, he'll get there. He's just young. |
Sadie is 12 weks too WE have a play pen in the basement with pee pads in there... I didn't want to take her out side while it's so cold. The enclosed area is like a potty to them and they understand that's what they are to do there. Sadie has had a few accidents when she wants to potty but she goes to the basement door most times and since she can't go past the gate she goes there. We take her every half hour or so and when she sniffs around we KNOW she has to go. These babies are young give your baby trime, take him often, and I would pick one spot that is always potty. Best of luck to you and your baby.:D |
I am definitely not an expert on Yorkies but I know using an Xpen has really trained Kiki on where to potty. From the day we brought her home I put her pee pads in the Xpen and she would stay in there until she pottied and then we praised and praised her with treats and hugs. We would let Kiki out after each potty but we very quickly learned her signs that she had to go again - circling and sniffing on the carpeted area. We watched her like a hawk and put her back in her Xpen until she pottied. She is year old now and I honestly think she has had only a handful of accidents on the floor and that was when she was only a few months old. Good luck! Anna http://www.dogster.com/dogs/511397 |
