Hi all, I'm a newbie and have a couple of questions 4 Attachment(s) Hi there, I've been reading the forum and it's been tremendously helpful. So I must say thank you very much to all who contribute in the forum.:) Sam is our first yorkie and he is just over 7months old now. He is the most affectionate, well behaved dog I've ever known..well that is until recently. :( He's been acting quite rebellious sometimes like when I tell him to go to bed around 11pm(he knows it's bed time). Once I tell him to go to bed he runs away from me and runs circle around the lounge room like a mad dog  and comes back at me trying to bite my toes. Not real vicious bite but just gentle one. I suppose he is trying to express his feeling. Also, he sometimes beg for food around the dinner table, which he was ever known to do before. Not only begging, if I ignore him he sometimes lets out this funny bark. Honestly, I don't think these are serious issues I think he's rather cute when he shows these rebellious behaviors. But it suddenly struck me the other day that he may be going through adolescence period. But he is neutered so my question is that do neutered dogs also go through adolescence period and exhibits those rebellious behavior? I hope it passes. What's your experience with this matter? Another question is, as we live in New Zealand, there aren't many options available when it comes down to dog food. Fortunately I could get hold of a person who imports Canidae so I have been feeding him Canidae all life stage kibble but Sam is not too keen on it. In fact, he's not too keen on any kibble. We tried 5 to 6 different dry dog food but he never eats enough. I recently found out a local dog food company which is highly regarded here and in Australia. Ziwipeak is the name and they make these air dried natural meat meal but when I researched about the food in question I found out their air dried real meat meal contains around 65% of meat. I'm worried it possibly has too high level of protein. I vaguely remember reading somewhere in the forum yorkies can't cope with the food which contains a very high level of protein. Am I just too worried? should I just try them for a while? Anyway, we love our Sam very much I just want the best for him. I'll try to attach some pictures of him hope it works. Thanks for reading. |
Hi there, I am also new here but had been reading a lot, most members (including my self) approve high protein diets cause dogs are carnivores and that is what they should eat, they are not meant to eat carbs and they don’t process them very well, actually many members feed raw which is a pretty high protein diet, but it might not be suitable for every dog, so you need to test by trial and error your boy a bit until you find the best food for him (very gently of course)… If you’re sticking to kibble for a while here is a great review page http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ that has been posted several times around the forum, hope it helps. Concerning his adolescence behavior I would say its normal and healthy, as long as it doesn’t get out of hand, you can search for zoomies and you will find out that some yorkies are like this quite often, if you wanna learn more about your buddies mind (the way he thinks I mean) I recommended you get the book “the other side of the leash” wrote by Patricia Mcconnell. Its great to see how much you love your baby, you will find precious info here so am glad you found this place. BTW your Sam is gorgeous! :animal-pa |

You must be very happy to have them around. It is very tempting to get a sister for SAM. |
Sam is absolutely ADORABLE! :) |
Welcome and Sam is a handsome little guy!!!!!:D |
Welcome! Sam is a doll! Sorry I can't answer your questions, Jeter is just a puppy and he is our family's first too! I am sure that others will be able to help out better. This site is full of great information! Good luck! |
Wow, now THAT is a cute lil' guy! I think you're right, you've got a spunky little adolescent on your hands. I don't know much about yorkie's but I know from our Dobie that 7-9 months roughly is the "teenage" period, where ya have to be firm and consistent with your training because he's testing the waters to see where his place is in the pack hierarchy. Best of luck, he is just too cute. And the pictures are very well done! D- |

A lot of YTers do, I'm considering it. Here's a thread with recipes - http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75933 Suzy is a great person to talk to about this - she has done a lot of research in this area. Many others are also knowledgeable. Glad to have you both here! |
3 Attachment(s) Thank you all! I've just ordered Ziwipeak air dried cuisine meal - fancy name! He loves their treats so I'm sure he will love his new food. I wouldn't mind if he puts on some weight. Out of sudden he started digging too:mad: Got a pic of him in action. 1. He started digging the sofa so I had to put a Possum fur throw over it. 2. Sam yawning, ever so cute. 3. Sam looking up, totally ignoring me and the camera. |
Just popping in to way Sam's one beautiful pup! I just love his coloring. |
He is RRRRRRRRRRRRRidiculously CUTE! Seriously! What a doll. I've read great things about Ziwi and I wish it was sold here. If you look in the Health and Diet area - you'll see a ton of stuff on raw, etc. - really informative. |
