Clipping Nails My Eddie is now over 10 weeks old, any advise on how to clip his nails? My breeder says to use normal human nail clippers and to do it when he is very tired. I tried this but had no luck, he wanted no part of it at all. ........Teigan |

nail clipping For the tiny one, human nail clippers will work if they are not old and craggy. I always hold a paw gently, but then firmly if they're wiggling. Talk a lot in high pitch cuddle tones, and have someone else hold a treat in front of 'em. It is so easy to clip off too much though. If he's just ten weeks, I would say just snip off the tiniest bit. That way the first time should be a good experience and you can always take off more later. The noise can sometimes scare them more than anything, so make sure you talk really good and chipper to him when you snip. I do a paw, then treat, a paw, then treat. If he starts bleeding, dab it with flour unless you have the sckiptic (sp?) stuff. When your done, praise super lots. Let him know how wonderful he did! Good luck! -Lori |
i am in the process of clipping tobys nails..... i use human nail clippers and wait untill he is completely asleep before i attempt it, i am doing a little bit on every nail, about ever three days or so..... if you do a little bit every couple of days then the "wick" will recede and you can cut a little more, and a little more, ect ect.... |

i thought about letting a groomer do it, but his toenails need to be cut often and i cant really afford to take him to the groomer that much, so my 'bravery' is really only necessity..... dont be fooled, i am still a little aprehensive about it when i have the clippers in my hand and he is sleeping there angelicaly, if i did mess up and cut to much i would feel SOOOOOOOOO bad :( but it hasnt happened yet, and im crossing my fingers that it doesnt happen EVER.... |

I can actually say that I have no problem at all clipping Nemo's nails, even though he would rather not go through it....I use human nail clippers after I clip one it usually gets his attention and he sits there until I finish, now bathing is a whole other story (wish it was as easy).... |
I use a dog nail clipper, but I haven't been able to clip his nails for 3 weeks now. When he was younger although he didn't like it he din't fight it much. Now that he's 5 months once he sees the clippers he begins his fight. He wiggles and tries to bite the clipper so much that each time I've tried I'd have to give up. He's going to the vet on Wednesday so I'll get her to do it, since he gets a little nervous with the vet he won't wiggle. After that I guess I'll keep trying every few days until I'm able to get him to let me do it again. |
Mine is also really, really bad for nail clipping! I have to have my husband hold her down to do it, whick I hate. The vet showed us how to restrain her, but I really don't like doing it, but her nails must be clipped. Someone here said to wrap them in a towel and just take out one leg at a time. She can get out of the towel no matter how tight we wrap her. Someone else here said to wrap them in a taowel and put them between your legs and do it that way. I could never do it alone, I know that. Look on the back side of the nail, and you can see the groove in the nail. DON'T cut beyond that! Good Luck is all I have to say. Ahia and Buckeye dont' need their nails clipped. the walks we take several times a day is on concrete and that is like a nail file. |
the last few months were HELL with my golden before she died...... one interesting thing about that though...... her nails grew like no other!!!!, i was told by my vet that their nails start growing A LOT when they are sick before they die ........ |
unfortunately your breeder must not have started her pups with nail clippings. When my Cheyenne had her pups I started clipping their nails the week they were born and every week from then on. My pups are now 4 months and I can clip their nails with no problem at all. I used the human nail clipper when they were real small and now use the scissor type now. The couple of dogs I have that I had gotten from other people and I do have trouble with I wrap them in the towel when I bathe them and put one paw at a time out and clip them that way. |
MMYorkies! Sure wish my breedeer had done that! It is such a battle to clip Snoodles nails that I really dread it. Your doing your new owners a great servaice! Pat |
toby's nails were deffinatly not cut when he was still with the breeder (the breeder was a groomer too, go figure :p )...... it was really bad, his nails were sharper tahn my cats nails :eek: (HE ACTUALLY DRUE BLOOD!!!)...... and his dewclaw nails were almost growing into itself!! :eek: :eek: |
