planning on getting Piper spayed I'm trying to arrange my work schedule so that I can be home with her. How many days did you stay home with your babies after they were spayed? Also, has anyone used any of those fancy new soft collars rather than using the plastic ones they provide from the vet? I was considering getting something other than just the plastic because those look so uncomfortable, but I am not sure if they make them small enough for a 5 pound puppy. |
I didn't leave Ellie alone for about two weeks after. This is VERY excessive but I was so worried. We used a onesie here and no e-collar. |
When our puppies are spayed here, they like to keep them overnight, although, I think when I take Ginger in to be spayed, probably sometime this month or next, I'm going to ask to bring her home that night..But, I have had all my pets spayed/neutered, and although, I'm not working now, I was when the other ones had their surgeries, and I went back to work right away..They heal completely differently than humans do..If you have her spayed on a Monday, and pick her up Tuesday, you should be back to work when you get her home and get her settled in.. |
I should probably clarify why I wouldn't leave Ellie. When she had oral surgery I was fine with leaving her after (after the anesthesia wore off). I was nervous with the spay because I did let her stay in a onesie and if she would've gotten it off she could've gotten to her incision. Her incision was also very large and she had about 20 staples. There is always a chance that something can go wrong and the could split open or something else could gp wrong and I wouldn't catch it in time. I worry way too much with her. |
Thanks so much for you advice. I'm really nervous and planning everything out makes me feel a lot more comfortable. I'm going to make sure to get Piper a onesie...that seems so much more comfortable than a cone! One day off I can do...two weeks would have been tough. But if my little one has a very large incision, I'm going to be a wreck about it too. I'm going to ask the vet more about how they do the procedure...staples sound scary. |
When i've had mine spayed, I never have put anything on them, infact, they don't even give you any meds for them. Usually mine are back to their old selves a day or two after their surgeries |
I just had my Lacey spayed/dental yesterday and today she has her happy tail back :D (she's maltese) She is sleeping a bit more and I have not had to use the collar yet. |
Please make sure the onesie fits right or they crawl out the neck.:p The back legs need to be snug enough so that she can't get through the holes to the incision. I also put it on backwards so the snaps were on her back and not touching her incision. It also had to be lengthened since she fit in the smallest size except she was too long for it. Please give pain meds. I know some vets don't give it and those vets make me mad.;) Sometimes you can't because of other health issues or if the dog had a c-section and is nursing but it is abdominal surgery. |
I stayed home with Madeleine for 3 days and after that she was feeling like herself again. I put her in a onesie to keep her from her incisions. I bought the newborn ones and after one wash to shrink them up they fit perfect. |
I was lucky I took Seth and Sasha to work with me for a couple of days. I knew they were better when they started running after the crew to take a ride in the Ambulance  |
Thanks so much! Planning on the surgery for her for a Thursday. Taking Friday off which will then give me 3 days at home before I have to go back to work on Monday. I have a really silly question..I went looking on the internet for onesies...are you talking about the ones for babies, or puppies (I couldn't find any for puppies..but maybe I am looking for the wrong thing!) |
My lil one goes in tomorrow morning for her spay and I am extremely nervous....her vet will be sending her home with pain pills and a collar and I have also gotten her a few onesies....I will be home with her for the next two weeks, but worry about her jumping as she thinks she is super dog and can fly off the sofa/bed/steps..... sending prayers that all goes well with your baby...... |
oh gosh.... reading by this thread, just reminded me of this issue. I've been so concerned about how Jaya is dealing with the new pup, I forgot that she turned six months last week. I don't know if i should wait until she needs her teeth extracted (she went to the vet for her shots two weeks ago and he said her teeth were fine... i dont know what that means... )...... darn...... I need to make an appt asap ............................ I don't go back to school until the 14th.... maybe I should make an appt for the 7th.... I hope she is one of those pups that go into heat later than sooner.... |
I used gerber baby onesies. It is hard to keep them from jumping. Ellie jumped three feet a day or two after her surgery. Oops. Not good but she is okay. |
