New Yorkie Owner Hello. My name is Dena, I adopted Guinness McLovin' on November 24th. He was born on October 7th. He's a small little guy. Already using the wee wee pads, he does pretty good with them although he does miss occassionally. I've never had a pure bred dog before, I've adopted all of my fur babies from the shelter. I'm very adamant about making sure I'm doing all the right things by him. From reading on here I'm noting some mistakes, I need to change his food immediately. The breeders had him in Science Diet and I continued that, but he's having some flakey skin, sorta like dandruff. I'm hoping it's just soap residue which I'm going to bathe him again, but I'm probably going to incorporate a new food anyhow. He's teething and I have many many toys for him but he prefers fingers and toes. He's such a sweetie and we are really enjoying him. I hope this community can help me learn more about my Yorkie so I can ensure he stays healthy. :animal-pa |
Good idea on switching foods, vets tend to push whatever food pays then o do so :( not all vets but some. Id look into some 5 star foods that are holistic and natural. Merricks, Innova, Canidea, etc.. Good luck with the teething! Its so fun ;) Diggy is 10 months and still teething and Bella stopped at about 7 months so ya just never know. Maybe try offering a BUlly stick, flossy or some natural healthy chew toy to help her thru the teething phase. Good luck with your baby you sound like your a wonderful mom!! |
If you decide to swap his food, I would suggest doing it gradually rather than all at once. Most major companies will send you samples to try if you call or visit their websites. What's best for one dog, the next may not be able to stomach, so you'll have to do trial and error and research unti you find the one that is best for him. Once you find it, supplement his diet as needed to accomodate for anything the food may not be providing. If the dry skin continues to be a problem, try adding some Flax Seed oil to his diet. It will help with the dryness and has other benefits as well. Congrats on your little one and welcome to YT. |
Thank you both. I will do it gradually, I've learned that with my older cocker spaniel, Maggie. we've had to change her's a few times. |
welcome to YT!!! |
Hi there, I am new to YT as well, just been surfing around reading about all the yorkie's. It sems our pups were born around the same time. Mascot was born Oct 3rd. We have an OED, but this is our 1st yorkie, as well as our 1st toy breed (small baby). |
OH my! He sounds so cute! Welcome to YT! Again, love the name! hehe. Lots of super smart and sweet ladies and gents here! Don't worry about him missing as it seems mine still miss on occasion...as long as they are in the general area! My little girl walks to the pad, gets her front feet on it and goes. She means to get on the pad, but sometimes I think she forgets the back feet need to be on there too! :p Welcome again! and hope that you enjoy it here! |

Oh how funny. My little guy gets his rear end to the back edge, standing backwards and pees off the back of the pad, as far as he can get. I try to make sure the pad is pushed against soemthing but it shuffles around at times LOL |
