Update on Quarantine!! Birds at all Ga. PetSmart stores under quarantine By MIKE MORRIS The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 12/31/07 The state Department of Agriculture has quarantined all PetSmart stores in the state because of an outbreak of psittacosis, a bird disease that can be transferred to humans. The quarantine, which applies only to birds sold at the stores, was also ordered for a Superpetz store in the Augusta suburb of Martinez. • More health news According to the Department of Agriculture, psittacosis is a bacterial disease that primarily affects parrots, parakeets and other members of the parrot family. The disease, which can be fatal to birds, rarely infects poultry. "We have had two confirmed cases of psittacosis at PetSmart stores in Hiram and Woodstock," said Tommy Irvin, the state's commissioner of agriculture. "There have also been confirmed cases at the dealer, Preferred Birds of Milton, Fla., that supplies birds to all the stores we are quarantining." Irvin said his office is requiring that PetSmart and Superpetz move the birds away from the public and begin using medicated feed to treat the birds. The quarantine is expected to last 45 days. According to PetSmart's Web site, the company operates 35 stores in Georgia. If this is contagious to humans i am sure it is to our fur babies too!! I wonder what measures they will be taking as they do have a grooming center there and some have the pet hotels??? function fnInformRArticles() { var imSiteId = '6801'; var imPageURL = 'www.ajc.com:80/coxWebApp/cgiconnect'; var imToken = ''; var imKey = 'true'; var goodurl = ''; var fullpath = location.pathname; var fullhref = location.href; var firstindex = 0; var lastindex = 0; if(imToken == 'true' || imKey == 'true') { var xmlHttpReq = false; var response = ""; var self = this; firstindex = fullhref.indexOf('/content') + 8; lastindex = fullhref.indexOf('html') + 4; goodurl = fullhref.substring(firstindex, lastindex); var strURL = '/search/webservice_client/webservice_clientclass/inform/portal_related_articles.jsp'; var path="informSiteId="+imSiteId+"&informPageURL="+go odurl; if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {// Mozilla/Safari/IE7 self.xmlHttpReq = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else if (window.ActiveXObject ) { // other IE Versions self.xmlHttpReq = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } self.xmlHttpReq.open('POST', strURL, true); self.xmlHttpReq.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'); self.xmlHttpReq.send(path); self.xmlHttpReq.onreadystatechange = function() { if (self.xmlHttpReq.readyState == 4) { response = self.xmlHttpReq.responseText; document.getElementById("informRelatedLink").inner HTML=response; } } } }fnInformRArticles() |
Whew.... Hope They Fix That Soon |
Thank goodness it was only limited to the birds. |
my concern is that because it is contagious to humans ...what are they going to do about the employees who handled them and come in contact with the pets that came into the store etc??? Just wondering how they are going to handle that but news is coming on soon so will check that out |
well per news report there have only been 50 cases in the state and its a rare disease but can be passed on to humans who will exhibt flu like symptons and most young, old and weak immune system people should be cautious. Well i won't be in petsmart for at least the month of january!! Their birds were right in the front of the store!! Better to be safe than sorry !! lol |
Yep, I saw this on the news this morning. |
I was at Petsmart today in Lancaster, PA and there was a sign that their birds weren't for sale and to check back late January. |
wow hope they get this under control very quick. |
The birds at the New Jersey Petsmarts are also under quarrantine. |
Well I sure hope this makes Petsmart rethink their policy on selling birds. |
It is in Bluffton, SC store too. Since Bluffton is only 30 minutes from Savannah GA. They posted a large sign across the bird cage. |
That is scary. I wonder "how" contagious it is? Would people going into the stores now be at risk and how it is spread...could it be on the things for sale? :( |
