During my search for a dog/puppy. I found an ad on puppyfind in KY that says sell out. Says she has several females and a couple of males. States they are AKC and are in good health. I am just wondering have any of you had experiences with buying from a breeder sell out. Is this usually a safe way to go since they are older or do you think this is a bad idea. Is a puppy a better way to go. Thanks |
I have no expereience, but I would be very careful and ask a lot of questions. |
Definately be cautious! be sure to see these dogs and surroundings, also make sure they have been spayed/neutered and dental done, those procedures can cost alot! Ask to see proof of recent vet checks. what is the reason for "selling out"? |
Sounds like these were breeder dogs. I'd definately go and see what kind of conditions these dogs were raised in. If they've spent most of their life in a kennel, they may not be properly socialized and may not want someone "loving" on them as others would. Good luck in your search! |
I suppose it depends on the breeder. Breeders often place retired breeding stock in pet homes--a typical practice. However, I would be very leary of anyone who advertises them on the net as if it were some retail clearance event.:( |
sometimes they do this when they can no longer care for them(health issues or something), you can go look at them, wouldn't hurt |
sometimes if there is an illness or something, they will do this..never hurts to go look |
Well I live about 5 hours away from where they are, so most of the contact is gonna be over the phone or through email. I have ask her several questions so we will see how she responds to these first few q's. Let me know if you can think of some good ones to ask. I did ask her why she was selling out. The ad shows them for 500.00 I dont know if that is 500 and up or what. Does that should to good to be true or what? |
The prices are very good, but, we do have some here in SC that are around $500-$600 and I've seen them and they're beautiful..I would ask her why she is selling, like I said, it may be due to illness, and I would have her send pictures..Where in KY is she? I know there are people on here that live in KY, as my sister does too, and if they're close to Bowling Green, KY, I know my sister would go check them out |
I replied on your other thread too: An ad like that means that a puppymill or backyard breeder is getting out of breeding and is selling all their "merchandise"..in this case dogs and puppies. Do not buy from these people. Research puppymills...they are aweful aweful places where a lot of dogs are kept in cages all their life and bred, bred, bred until they can't breed anymore..then they are disposed of. These dogs are sold to petstores and to people over the internet. They are badly bred and normally have many health problems. They usually have behavioral issues as well as they are kept in cages and not socialized and puppies are ripped from their mother at 6 weeks of age. To find a reputable breeder, go to www.ytca.org They have a breeder referral list for each state. You can also ask for recommendations on here or check out the for sale section. When looking for a breeder, ask several questions...and expect them to ask you a lot of questions in return. It's so important to find a reputable breeder. Good Luck I know you recently posted about a breeding pair you found and that you're interested in breeding. You really need to stop looking at backyard breeders and start looking for reputable breeders. Find a mentor & learn what to look for in a dog. |
Well the more I read, the more I realize that it is prolby best to purchase from a breeder with a health guarantee. And more than one person has said not to buy an older dog, that could also be selling because of a bad habit. I just thought a older dog might be a possible choice for me but I guess not. Thanks for your help. |
