Preventing Tragedies I used to post here but stopped about 2 years ago because I got too depressed reading about how other people's yorkies were injured or killed by mostly preventable accidents. Here is an idea I use to prevent such an occurrence and hope others can learn from it. If you know your dog has a tendency to rush the front door when guests or your family comes to the door, and what yorkie doesn't?, then keep your dog in a room that is gated from the front door. I never let Jackson have free run of the house, I have to know where he is. He stays, mainly in the kitchen and if some one comes to the front door he can see them from the kitchen but can't get to the door where he could run out. I have a step-over gate which is the best. Good suggestion and a great reminder to us all! I know that I am guilty of slacking up on watching mine when I open the front door, taking for granted that they will stay put and not run out. It's a good idea for us all to remind ourselves that sometimes a dog's training takes a back seat to it's instinct. Thanks for the reminder.:) |
I have a baby gate across the little hallway leading to my front door which I have to step over every time I use that door and so do my visitors. It is an inconvenience but well worth the piece of mind that my two guys won't run out into the road and get hit by a car. Even the best trained dog can have a lapse of training at any time and it's just not worth that risk to me. |
I have an x-pen that is set up in a semi-circle at my front door, attached to the wall on both ends. I can open the door and people can come and go without the dogs ever having access to the door. Yes, it's a little inconvenient, but well worth it. I've dealt with it for over 10 years now and it's just part of life at my house. |
Excellent post. We work hard to train our dogs NOT to run out the front door. Still...one day a few months ago, Bernie took off the second I opened the door:eek: . Thankfully, he is attached to my hip, so instead of giving chase I stayed inside, closed the door and said a little prayer. When I opened it he flew back in.:D That day, hubby went to the basement and built a freestanding gate that spans our foyer (9 feet wide). Now, there is no chance of escape. Its a simple solution that will prevent a lot of heartache. |
I have a chain link fence in my front yard. Its not the most attractive thing but it keeps my dogs from running out in the street |
I have a gate at my front door also that's mounted to the wall. It's just a simple wooden, expandable baby gate, but it works! I put it up after Bentley almost getting hit when he ran out in the street. I know that for me, I didn't think that my dog would ever do that so I think some might also not think about it too. But putting up the gate has given me so much piece of mind :) |
