Home Vaccinations? One of my friends is currently in the market and she stumbled across a breeder who gave all of her puppies shots herself. Is this something that is commonly done, or is it a big no no? Do Yorkies who are vaccinated this way turn out okay? Just wondering. :) |
vaccine Reputable, knowledgable breeders all over the world give their own vaccinations..but like anything else, the breeder must be well informed as to when and what to give..best wishes... |
It's common for breeders to give vaccinations themselves. In fact any pet owner can buy and give their own vaccinations themselves. The only vaccine that MUST be given by a vet is the rabies vaccination. |
Yes, it is very common. Not something to take lightly though. They must be work in conjunction with their vet to make sure they are doing it properly. Giving them at the proper schedule, etc. There are some vaccines, like those containing Lepto, that must be avoided. |

I have been giving my own shots for 9 years and have never had a problem. I only give distemper and parvo and I do not start the shots until the puppies are at least 10 weeks old. Many vets and breeders over vaccinate so I recommend you do research on the dangers of vaccinations. A puppy that is given too many shots at too young an age can develop problems. |
I do my vaccinations for my dogs as well as my litters of puppies. It's very common for reputable breeders to give vaccinations themselves. Most people can vaccinate their own dogs if they wanted to do it themselves. The rabies vaccination is one that must be done by a vet |
I do not give my own shots , I prefered to take my babies to the vet as I remembered that years back when I first got my 1st dog (pet) he had come with the complete puppy shots from breeder and when I took him to the vet for last set and rabies , that vet talked to me into redoing all his shots again as he said that many breeders do not do so good at vaccinations and that the pup wouldn't be protected, so I let him redo.....he was the expert:rolleyes: Now I know he was after the green paper:mad: I didn't know anything back then . I have that very present in my mind and I just don't want to take any chances of having my babies re-vaccinated after they leave here so I just take them to my vet for all their shots. |
I think it's fine, but then again, I don't know anything about breeding. I however do know this... Chip had a couple shots before he was sold to us. When we took him to the vet, the vet told us the shots she was going to give him and I told her that his records said he already had that. She said that vets don't consider a breeder's record and that it's not legit. She was probably wrong because she has done some nasty stuff (long story), so if someone knows different, please let me know. |
I don't think a vet can trust ALL breeders vaccinations. On my vaccination record, I put the date of the vac. Plus, I peel off the label from the actual vial that I used and stick it beside the date. That way the vet knows exactly what I used and when. To my knowledge, the vets have not "re-done" my vaccinations. Plus, I use the exact same vacc. that my vet uses. |
