How high is too high? My yorkie is scared to jump off the couch, but occasinally slips off, I;m wonderin how high is too high? or high enough to break his little legs? Jacky is such a scaredy cat, he can run up the stairs but scared to go down :p He is 5.5 months old. 5.2 lb |

you can't put a height requirement on falling and injury. Mine jumps off the couch all the time but it only takes one time to land the wrong way and break a bone. you know how they say you can drown in an inch of water? same theory applies to falling/slipping. |
thank you very much :) how high is too high for jumping down normally? or should i not risk it at all and not let him jump up/ down? |

I have the steps on my couch and also my bed for my lil one, but she still jumps.... she uses the steps to go up, but how do you stop them from jumping off and using the steps instead????????? |

Kevin007, I have "teapots" (8 lbs) and they prefer to have something to help with getting off the couch. I have their snoozer carseat sitting on the floor next to the couch. Shelby won't get on the couch unless she has it to us as a "step". When they were little, I made a ramp out of throw pillows that they used. I guess this really didn't answer your direct question, but thought it may give you some ideas! :) |
welcome to yt:) Mine are jumpers to, I worry about the back of the couch, I put some blankets and pillows up there, they can not get up there, when they try, I tell them ( NO down ) they know what that means, its hard when they want to jump on everything, the steps sound like a good idea to:) |
Jumping on and off furniture can cause luxating patellas and back problems in these little guys. Why not get some pet steps to be safe? |
Not being sarcastic - How much will it cost to fix? Any break, or soft tissue injury can cost HUNDREDS. Err on the side of caution *did I say that right?, and don't let him jump at all. Dogs are not known for logic or common sense and many owners are not either. Be smart. A couch is too high. (look at the length of the leg) unless he is landing on a thick, padded mat covered in a feather down comforter with pillows. Then, let him jump. I once dropped my purse on my yorkies back. Emergency visit, X-rays, bandage, cortisone and pain meds proved to me that these tiny little balls of fluff need a little extra attention. Nothing was wrong. Just a bit of inflammation. |

Puppies can be kind of clumsy in their landing skills so I would put pillows or stairs everywhere that he seems to jump for now. As he ages and gets more agile, I think 1 1/2 feet won't seem so dangerous. Shelby uses pillows for our bed (3 ft?) but she is on and off the couch without assistance now. She is smallish, and she is 2 1/2 years old. The jumping isn't really a problem now. I just wish she didn't think she could fly :eek: |
