Question from a new Yorkie owner...
Is it absolutely imperative that I NOT give my new yorkie puppy Rawhide?? The breeder told me not to, and I think I read it elsewhere, but the reason I ask is, we have rawhide in the house for my Sheltie, and Chloe came across it and she LOVED it! She was amused for quite a while. Just thought I'd ask some fellow yorkie owners to see what you all think?

I've also heard not to give them rawhide bones because it can break into small pieces and they could possibly choke. However, I have given Hercules the rawhide sticks without a problem. They don't break into pieces, so it seems ok to me. It just gets all soggy on the ends.

I give Mia rawhide under supervision. When it starts to rip off pieces, it goes to my lab. She actually prefers the BIG bones (guess it makes her feel big) and those really take forever for her to get to the point where I take them away.

Our breeder and Dr. Lucy says no rawhide for Toto ... the pig ears are OK. My son's Border Collie choked on a rawhide bone when one end came untied and was soft and slimey. My daughter-in-law just happened to be home and Missy was almost unconsious when Cindy realized what had happened! She is a nurse and had a difficult time getting it out of her throat ... it was so far back and lodged in there. Toto has gagged on the stringy pieces on pig ears, so we just play it safe and let her have neither anymore!

Rawhide
 
I have 2 non-Yorkie pups who get rawhide, but as someone else stated, it's under supervision. I have a friend who has large dogs, and one of them became sick, and they believe it was because he swallowed a big chunk of unslimed rawhide that got lodged in the intestinal tract for a few days. Doggie lost weight, lack of appetite, etc. Finally passed after a few days - or got broken down in belly.

Since then, I watch mine much more carefully.

My vet says yes, especially for my lab mix (Big chewers). I'm not sure if Yorkies are chewers yet though, as I am IN A DESPERATE SEARCH for a well-bred and healthy, non-puppy-milled, less than 7# Yorkie to play with my terrier mix breed, hence my newbie status.

Sorry if that's a bunch 'to chew on' with no useful info ...

lucynfred .... are you in Tuscaloosa, AL? We found our breeder in Marietta, GA. She only breeds purebred showdogs and buying our little Toto is by far the best thing we have ever done! I will be glad to give you the contact information, if you are interested? BTW ... welcome to YorkieTalk! ;)

I am Lori, mother of Hank, Lucy and feline, Fred. (Hank's the newest addition and therefore was excluded from my e-mail -- I use the signon for all my internet stuff). Anyway, that wold be awesome! I've done online research for a good kennel around here, and am looking for one I can train while I'm not too busy this New Year-spring. Found Yorkepup.com, but don't want to ship from Texas and would rather have breeder closer to home.

Would love more info! Newspaper breeders in Alabama seem a bit unreliable.

Our home is in Anniston but we are seldom there due to our work. We are in western Colorado and looks like we will be here for quite a while! The travel is nice, but sometimes you just want to spend time at home. Our breeder is in Marietta, GA and her website is: www.tyava's.com! My husband looked for several months and was finally referred to Ava by a vet in Ashland who also raises Yorkie show dogs and specializes in this tiny breed ... we feel like we got the best of both worlds ... the purebred we were looking for and a vet that we trust completely! On her website you can see Toto's dad Wyatt and her grandma, Wilderness Girl. Her schedule is totally dedicated to her yorkiebabies and I can never reach her until noon or later. Let me know if I can be of any further help and please keep us updated on your search!! ;)

Thanks so much! I have been in touch with a fellow Yorkietalk member about a boy that may be ready in Feb., but I'm still looking around to find the right tike. Hope y'all enjoy the Colorado atmosphere, and I'd like to say thanks so much for the cordial welcomes and feedback I've recieved from members on this site so far! It's great to know people are as crazy about their pets -- Yorkies -- as I am (and will be w/new baby!)!

Thanks, Lori! Good luck in your search and please let us know when you find the baby! We all get excited about new babies ... if Toto weren't such a spoiled handful, I would get another! ;) Colorado is beautiful and we love it [not enough to want to retire here]. :)

I Gave My Puppy Raw Hide Pig Ears He Loved Them But They Made Him Very Sick My Vet Said Rawhide They Cannot Digest Very Well So He Said Never Again I Hope It Helps

I don't understand why they sell rawhide if it is not good for dogs. I mean it is every where every dog store and yet the breeder the vet all say no.. So why is it in the stores.. :mad:

I used to give Bentley rawhide until I heard a few stories about puppies choking on them so I threw them all out. We now give him greenies and bully sticks. The bully stick turns into soft goo when they chew it so it is not as dangerous (just don't ask where it comes from).
