Paranoid puppy in heat! Is this normal? My almost two yr old yorkie is in heat. I just noticed the spotting this morning. And she has not been herself at all and its scarring me. She has not eaten or drank anything today, she wont sit still, she wont come to me, she hasnt slept or even layed down all day, her ears are back like shes worried, and she just keeps looking around like shes paranoid. She has NEVER acted like this before. Any thoughts???? I'm really worried for her. Thanks in advance. |
When was the last time she was in heat? Hopefully it was more than about four or five months ago because it sounds like a pyometra. Not eating and drinking is not good if she has never acted like this during heat before. Please call the vet. |
Is this the first time she's ever been in heat? Two years of age is abnormally old to be going into heat for the first time. It's normal for them to lay around or be restless and not want to eat while in heat. Be sure to supervise her at all times for about three weeks to make sure she isn't bred. Don't leave her unattended outside for even a second...a male dog can dig under or climb over a fence and it only take a minute for an accident to happen. I would also have her spayed as soon as her heat cycle is over. |
This is the second heat cycle, last time she was fine and acted normal, her last cycle was at least 8 months ago. And she is never outside with out me, even for a second. we dont have a back yard for her to play. (apt living) |

Is she actually showing the signs of being in heat? Is she swollen? licking herself? If she isn't eating or drinking, give her some nutra-cal and take her to the vet. I'd rather be over-reactive. Were you planning on breeding her? Is this why she hasn't been spayed? Pyometra is very serious. It can kill your dog. |
yes, she's swollen and licking like crazy. So I do believe she's in heat. We were thinking about breeding her, but all this is already scaring me. She is my first dog as an adult! So I guess I'll just have her fixed. asap |
