Twisted Hip! This weekend Sydney was playing fetch in my parents backyard and twisted her leg up by the hip area. She just stepped on some uneven ground (while going 60 miles per hour), twisted it and went down for a second and then was fine. She only yipped for a second. I called the emergency vet and they said to keep her somewhat inactive for 24 hrs and if she seemed better by then not to worry about it. I did that and she seemed fine...running all over the house and stuff. Then last night (3 days later) she was playing fetch again and did it again in my kitchen. She screamed for a full 5 minutes and was holding her leg strangely. We checked for breaks or a popped out joint...but there is nothing like that. We massaged it and she stopped crying and started holding it normally again. We put her down on the floor but she wouldn't put weight on it. So I called the ER vet again...but durig the course of the conversation with the vet Syd started putting weight on it. The vet told me to keep an eye on her and if she is favoring it in a day or 2, bring her in. Fetch is definately out for at least a week. But should I be more concerned? Could it just be like when a human turns their ankle? Has this happened to any of you? :( |
Oh wow - that doesn't sound good - IF I were you - keep the video handy and if it happens again - try to get it documented and when you DO take her in - you can at least have something to show them even if she isn't favoring it - that sounds awful for her !! I hope she just DID twist something only - it can hurt and take a few days to feel better - Chanel did something once just running in the yard - I never did know what it was that made her cry but I was freaking out.... Hugs to your baby ! |
I wonder if it is slipping in and out of the joint... :( |
That happened with one of our heelers. We completely stopped playing fetch, and put up all the balls and frisbies for two weeks. When we resumed playing, it was straight line fetching. Nothing that would require jumping. It was soon after that, when it was time for her annual physical at the vet. He told us what we did was the best thing at the time. He checked her out, and she was fine. He said it was apparent, that it was only a pulled muscle or strain. No bones broken or out of line. I do remember the crying. Sometimes when Pepper would simply lay down, she would let out just one LOUD YELP, but that was all. We watched her very close, and each day she got better. Good Luck with your baby. It's true, they do love to play. |
