Mya came home!!!
 

Well after many weeks of waiting we brought Mya home yesterday... she is precious.. doing wonderful with her pee pads and only one accident on the carpet. She cried just a little when she had to go to bed last night but I can already tell she is going to be a perfect addition to the family. Here is a picture... she will be 6 weeks tomorrow.

She's adorable. Why did you get her so young though? She should have stayed with her breeder until 10-12 weeks. 6 weeks is way too young to be away. Please be very cautious with her..make sure she eats regularly and have nutrical or karo syrup on hand in case she becomes hypoglycemic. You'll also want to not take her anywhere or expose her to other dogs for a couple more months since she hasnt had any vaccinations yet. I hope she makes it okay

She should have stayed with her mother for another six weeks. In many states it's illegal to sell a puppy less than eight weeks old.

But 6 weeks is way too young!! She should still be with her mother. You will have to keep a very close eye on her and make sure she is eating good.

Now I am all nervous! The breeder gave me information on low blood sugar and said to feed her 3 times a day and add Kayro to her food. She seems to be doing very well... we keep a constant eye on her and will be. She is playing well but I only let her play for 10-15 minutes then she rests again.. any other suggestions I should follow? I thought 6 weeks was standard to release from breeder? She will be 6 weeks tomorrow... the breeder took her to the vet Friday and she got her shots, she won't need any more until 9 weeks.

no puppy should leave at 6 weeks in my opinion. Even large breed puppies shouldn't leave their breeder until 8 weeks. Toy breed puppies are so tiny that they really need to be with their mom, siblings, and breeder until 12 weeks old - longer if they are very tiny. A lot of socialization takes place during this time and the mother teaches the puppies a lot, including bite inhibition. They also learn to socialize with their siblings. Toy breed puppies are very prone to hypoglycemia. They may be weaned by 6 weeks and eating okay at the breeders, but the stress of moving to a new home can often cause them to not eat and drink well - causing hypoglycemia. After 12 weeks old, the chances of hypoglycemia go down considerably. You shouldn't have to constantly mix karo with the food...if she eats on her own, that should be sufficient. Karo should only be used if she isn't eating and is starting to show signs of hypoglycemia. Constantly giving karo really messes up their blood sugar...causing it to rise and crash very fast. Your breeder really should have kept her for at least another 4 weeks...most reputable breeders do not release them until after 12 weeks old.

No, six weeks old is not standard. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's Code of Conduct requires Yorkie breeders to keep puppies until they are 12 weeks old:

8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks
of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and
temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs.

Not only is the risk of hypoglycemia great, poor Mya has missed out on many valuable lessons she would have learned from her mom and littermates had she been allowed to stay with them longer.

Six weeks is awfully young to get vaccinations, too. Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol which has been adopted by 27 vet schools recommends that puppies not be vaccinated until they are nine weeks old. At six weeks, she probably still had natural immunities from nursing which the vaccinations have probably killed off. :(
