Can Someone Please Help Me???
 

Purchased a puppy a couple of months ago from www.seasideyorkies.com out of miami, florida. paid a small fortune for a "teacup" that turned out to be a fairly large yorkie. The puppy cannot sit still for a second. Does not listen, does not crate train, pees everywhere, poos everywhere. Is this an inbred dog? Is this normal for yokies? Has anyone else purchased from this breeder? Someone PLEASE HELP with some answers.

If you have only had your puppy for a couple of months, just be patient. It will take awhile for the puppy to settle in. And most puppies do run around like crazy. They have so much "puppy" energy. Please be patient and don't get mad at the puppy for being a puppy. Merry Christmas

Seriously though, I'd agree with what the above poster said.

Puppies are a LOT of work! I'm not sure how old your is, but if he/she is only 4-5 months, then peeing and pooping and running are completely normal.

We rarely left our boys when they were little, there was always someone with them. We took them out to potty every 30 minutes or so and they still had some accidents. When you take him/her out, and he/she "goes" make a BIG deal out of it. If he/she likes treats, give him/her a treat every time he/she potties outside. Or if not a treat eater (like my oldest), then give lots of praise and attention.

Eventually, with the first one we got a doggie door, and he learned very quickly to go out to potty by himself. The second was was even easier because he had a role model.

Now, let me be clear though. Our first boy is not neutered and he does mark in the house. All our floors are hard wood or concrete and yes, I do have to clean up his "sprinkles". But he is only 4 lbs and does not sprinkle much. But it will always be something that he does. I don't like it, but I love him, and that's just the way it is. Our other boy is neutered and he never goes in the house. If your puppy is a boy, you can use a belly band so that he pees in the belly band, rather than in your house.

When they were little and we had to leave them, we put them in an X-pen, rather than a crate. The first one slept in a crate for the first few weeks, but then we let him sleep with us. The second one slept with us from day one. Neither has ever pottied in the bed - threw up on the bed, yes, but no potty.

Yorkies, or any puppy for that matter, is a lot of hard work in the first few months. If you are not prepared, it can be a challenge.

When you say "larger", how much does he weigh now? Even a somewhat larger yorkie is still pretty darn small. Gizmo is 7 and a half pounds now and he still seems little to me. And at 5 or 6 months, your pup's still growing. (So is Gizmo at 9 and a half months.)

The hyperactivity will calm down a lot as he gets a little older. Gizmo still gets 'fired up" when people visit, but he calms down after a while.

Puppies ARE a lot of work. Just hang in there and have a lot of patients.

Having a puppy is like having a new baby except without the diapers! There's no sleep, crying in the middle of the night, tummy problems, short burst of energy with naps in-between, and lots of pee and poo! With my puppy, we have play periods of about 30 min and then I make him calm down and rest. I try to put him in my lap at first, if this doesn't work, he goes in his xpen or crate and almost always falls to sleep. I never let him run around by himself (cause of chewing and pottying) and he only gets to touch his cute little paws to my carpets when he has just gone pee and poo. Good Luck. Like babies, they eventually grow out of it!

Welcome to YT! I use to think that Riddick would never calm down, but I'm happy to say that they do.. Riddick is now 3 but he use to widdle in the house quite often and I thought that I would never have him trained to go outside. But I did somehow and the only time he will widdles now, is, if he gets excited when someone new comes over..
But I now have to do it all over with my new baby yorkie.. and he's a little terror when he wants to be.. lol.. But I know that, that's what a yorkie pup is all about. And I wouldn't trade that for the world!!:p

So true. People do not realize the work involved and you have to stay on top of this, his or her training depends so much upon you just like a real child.

When I bought my third Yorkie (the others were older rescues) I was told to take him out to pee after he woke up from a nap, 5-10 minutes after he ate, and right after he played which may be 15 min. or 30 min. I was also told to expect him to poop quite often which he has (he is slowing down.) My 7 mo. rescue pommie poops when he wakes up in the morning, after he eats, at noon, when I come home from school, after he eats his supper, and again before he goes to bed. Even though it is not a large amount, I still think it's a bit often, but it will most likely slow down soon.:) Good luck with your Yorkie. Just because you do not have a "teacup" doesn't mean that he won't be a wonderful, loving doggie. Besides, "teacup" is a myth. The term "teacup" is used to hook buyers. I've learned a lot by joining YT. There's always suggestions on proper diet, training, what symptoms to look for if your Yorkie is ill, and many more subjects are covered. Keep checking in. It's great!

Welcome to YT.! Sounds like a typical Yorkie to me, I have 3, 1 male 4 yrs. old and he is a whopping 10 lbs.,1 female 3 yrs. old and she is 8 lbs., and their
baby girl is 4 1/2 lbs. and she is 1 yr. and 3 months. They all have different personalities but in general they are calm but at the drop of a pin they will go from zero to sixty in 10 seconds! My females will still have accidents under certain conditions? They will not waite/hold it as long as my male.
Be Patient, it can be very frustrating......besides your dealing with an ego too! You have to be consistant with his Training. Do you walk him at least twice a day, for 30 min. at least? Regardless of how small or big a Yorkie is or ends up being? They must be walked, they are Terriers, bred over a hundred years to be hunting dogs, just because we dress them and put them in fashionable purses does not mean that, that's what they are used to? They need to burn off all that Energy somehow. We all paid small fortunes for our Yorkies, the Breeder always says they will be small because that's what "Sells"
the smaller the more expensive! Once you get him "Fixed" he will most likely calm down, as they get older they will mellow out too. You also have to train them to be "Lap" dogs too, not all of them want to sit on your Lap either, I have to force Artie to sit still, but Abigail and Tiffany will fight over my Lap for the coveted "Throne" seat. the puppy is approx 7-months old. She weights approx 5.5 pounds. I am feeling a bit better if this is typical yorkie behavior. I mean it is cute at times, but very embarassing when vistors come over, as she is an energizer bunny that will not sit still for a second.

Is this your first puppy ever or has it just been a while? All that you described behavior wise is typical puppy antics. Yes, you do wonder when it will end or get better:eek: ....all I can say is it does!....and then you wish you had a puppy again!:D As far as your puppy size???? 5.5 pounds at 7 months is certainly not "teacup", but in truth, there is no such thing. From the weight you gave us, I'd say you may have a yorkie "standard" - 3-7 pounds; maybe slightly larger. You never know for sure til they're done growing. Curious.....how much did the parents of this pup weigh, do you know?

I do not know what her parents weight was. When do yourkies reach their full grown size?

They do start calming down a bit with age; but, (hopefully) you'll always be dealing with The Zoomies :D

If you're not going to use him for breeding purposes, please have him neutered, as soon as the vet will do it? As far as his size, I was told my 14 lber would be 4 lbs. I never bought from anyone that advertised tea cups, as there is no such thing, and if they say they have tea cups, it throws up a big red flag...You have to confine your baby, and let him out every so often..he should never have run of the house until he's completely housebroken..good luck

I have had great results with potty training by using doggie diapers. I put a diaper on her and take her out regularly and remove the diaper and she goes outside. The diaper is not really to catch their pee or poo, but I have found that they don't want to pee in it because it is uncomfortable to be wet. It only took her 1 time wetting in it and then no more. Now I don't have to use the diapers anymore because she has gotten used to going outside and lets me know when she needs to go out. I got my diapers at www.designerdoggie.net I really like them too. I purchased others that were not good, fell off, uncomfortable for her to walk in, etc. the one they offer at petsmart is expensive and just plain ugly.

Your pup sounds just like mine. He is spoiled, demanding, extremely hyper, hard to housebreak, opinionated and destructive. On the other hand, he's highly intelligent, cute, and becoming a good companion. You must be patient and work with them daily to get them to do what you want them to do. When they sell these dogs, there is no disclaimer. Sure they're cute and all the rage. However, they are work and you can't give up. You'll see, all your hard work will pay off. My Willy is obedience trained and we work at it everyday. Because he is hyperactive, sometime it is hard to get his attention. I work with him daily; its almost becoming a game with him. Just be patient and put in some work with him. It is well worth it!

Incidently Willy is 10.9 lbs at 16 months. I don't expect him to get any bigger. As long as he is healthy, that is all I care about. I am still housebreaking him. We go out on the average of every 90 minutes. If he does his business in the house, it is my fault; after all, I know my pup. It's constant training for us because he needs to be taught manners. He is catching on and I'm proud of him.

This is pretty normal. New yorkie owners (like I was when I got Wobie) get pretty overwhelmed when these babies act like the little terrors they are. :D

Some of the bad behavior is probably due to her bad breeding, and bad experiences growing up in that puppymill-esque environment. That would explain why she's hard to crate-train, if she's used to pottying and pooping in her own area, and sleeping in her own waste. :(

She is not a large yorkie, it seems like she'll be close to, if not within standard weight. You have nothing to worry about there.

How is her health? Thats what I'd be more worried about after buying from a breeder like that...

For pottytraining, I'd suggest confining her to an ex-pen, rather than a crate when she's unsupervised. I'd also suggest training classes, which would also help you two bond. Do you walk her? That should help with her hyperness. Spaying might also help, as neutering does, but I'm not sure about that.

Thank you for your words. She stuns me at times. I purchased her the cutest, coziest, little bed to sleep in and she pees in it. It angers me, but after I calm down, I sit and think about what you are saying to me. Maybe it was bad breeding and this behavior cannot be helped. She is also a loving little girl when she decides to be. :) Anyway, thank you all for such encouraging words, and advice! It is GREATLY appreciated! :D

Belle also peed in her crate... thats what the breeder told me to train her to do :( i didn't know any better... but now she has a puppy pad where she goes when she's inside-- we walk twice daily, and she is just a joy to have :) patience is the best word of advise i can give you, it takes time... lots of time, but the rewards are well worth it... :)
