Bad behavior I have a 6 month old yorkie. Lately (past few weeks) he has started attacking me. He bites me, barks at me, lunges at my face. I could be just sitting down doing nothing and he attacks me. I could be playing w/him and he stops playing w/me and starts attacking. It is very frustrating because when I go to discipline him he attacks even more. I tell him no and he lunges at me. He only does this w/me not w/my boyfriend. I am the main caretaker. His behavior is really mind boggling to me. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it because I am to the point where nothing has worked. I cannot even sit down to read. I am FRUSTRATED!! |
I am so sorry this is happening to you. I don't have any advice since Murfee is my first yorkie and I am no expert. I hope this gets better and am sure that someone on here will have some advice for you. Welcome to yt, by the way. Merry Christmas |
Just wanted to say welcome to YT!! hope someone can give you some good advice ! |
Sounds like your pup wants your attention. I find that attending obedience classes is a great help. The classes help you understand what you need to learn and what you need to do in order to have a well behaved dog. Find a good class and enroll as soon as you can. It's great fun! You won't find too many Yorkies or small dogs in the classes, but I believe that all dogs and their owners need to learn together. Good luck! |
Have you had your puppy for a few months? Or is he new to your home? Perhaps he is trying to get your attention, but if you are playing with him when it starts, that shouldn't be the cause. Perhaps it's a bit of a battle for dominance. You'll want to be firm but very calm when disciplining him. I would also suggest a puppy class as lopresm suggested. It may help re-establish you as the pack leader. I'm hoping that someone else here has some experience with this that can give you more specific advice! |
Who is Alpha? Apparently he's not doing it to your BF, because he has accepted him as Alpha, so you and him are competing for your place in your Pack! You need to do something quickly otherwise he will get worse towards you. Do you walk him? Alot of behaviour problems stem from lack of exercise. Dogs sense energy and you are not sending the right message, he does not respect you. Do not allow him to do this to you, he is not playing he is quite serious. Alot of people who own Yorkies do not like to discipline, socialize or Train them or even deal with their problems because they are so cute and small compared to other Dog Breeds. He will get worse if you allow it, you have to correct him every time he does it! And do not play rough or in a manner that would give him the opportunity to do it or that would trigger that behaviour? Remember every thing your Dog does, he does because you some how taught him. Try to remember what made him do it in the first place? Without more details I can't be more specific? |
I know with my Peanut (which some times is funny others I have to be stern with him) that if someone or even the cat is getting attention around him he goes nuts! If he is in my daughter’s bed in the morning when I wake her up for school he sounds like a wild dog  . He puts himself in like an attack mood and growls like crazy as if he will attack. At first, it was cute but lately it has gotten more aggressive. Now I tell myself its more of a protective reactions but he knows me. So I told my daughter to start corrected him and telling him NO to just show that for me he does not need to be like that. I know my Peanut loves me........ but at times he gets jealous heck if we pet the cat he growls and don’t like it. I and just my opinion they want all the attention and if someone else takes that away ............. Look OUT! lol Hang in there  mine calms down faster and faster as he gets older! |
To me it sounds like he is trying to be alpha (like pp said). Training classes are an excellent idea and will help you and your dog communicate with each other better |

When Maxwell would do that to me (never to my husband), I would gently hold him on his back back and look at him and say no. He seemed to quickly get he wasn't Alpha over me. Someone has to be on the lower rung of the pack, and it shouldn't be you. |
