Baby is sick My little pup is 1# 4 oz., 6.5 weeks old. He was fine at his checkup and shot yesterday. Today I gave them Sentinel for flea and heartworm. This evening I found a little poop stuck to his hiney. I soaked his butt and cleaned him up. After drying him, I had him wrapped in a handtowel to put him to bed. When I layed him down he had pooped - a lot - I just barely noticed it before mom cleaned it up. Then he started shivering and now seems bloated. His temp is 102.1, I put vaseline on his bottom, then cortizone 10. It seems his rectum is a little swollen out. I also fed him about 1/2 inch of Nutrical. He has stopped shivering but did not go to the bathroom again, and he is sleeping wrapped up in a towel. Do you think he is fine and I can put him to bed or should I continue to watch him. And is there something else I should do. |
The best advice to me is always to call the emergency vet and check with them. I'm sorry I can't be of much help, but I would say to keep an eye on him for a while. |
Laura- I would watch him! He's only 6.5 weeks? I thought they werent supposed to take those meds like Sentinel until they were 12 weeks or over 2 lbs? |
Thanks! He is asleep on my lap. I have to keep checking to make sure he is alive. I think he is so tired after shivering for such a long time. |

I really don't know if that would have made him constipated? I think he had a piece of dry poop stuck over his rectum that may have stopped him up. It's wierd, but he seemed fine before I bathed him. |

Thanks again. Now he threw up all over himself and me. I had to rinse and dry him again, and now he is shivering again. I guess I will stay up with him until he wants to run around. Hopefully soon. |

My vet said the same thing. He wouldn't put Linus on heartworm or flea meds until he was 16 weeks, but he's only 2.8 lbs. I would make sure to give more nutrical, and if he doesn't stop shaking soon I would call the emergency vet. They go down so fast that I just wouldn't take any chances! |
Laura~ You are doing great with your little sick one. I had a problem when Hefner was about 13 weeks with the rectum popping out after poop was stuck. It scared me to death because I thought he was losing his insides. I t wasback to normal the next day and he was fine. I know this guy is tiny and young so it's a little different. I will do some research on the net and try to find out whatever I can. Will post what I find. |

Okay, here is what I found. This puppy may one of the small percentage with a problem and being under 2 lbs is a concern too. With this info Laura, you may want to call the emergency vet to see what they advise if you have not already. . How safe are SENTINEL Flavor Tabs? SENTINELŪ (Milbemycin oxime/lufenuron) Flavor TabsŪ are very safe. They are approved by the FDA* using strict standards similar to those for human medicines. SENTINEL Flavor Tabs are even safe for puppies as young as four weeks, weighing at least two pounds. As with other heartworm preventives, dogs must be tested for heartworm prior to using SENTINEL Flavor Tabs. In a small percentage of treated dogs, digestive, neurologic and skin side effects may occur. For full product information, see product label. *NADA #141-084, Approved by FDA. |
I remember my vet giving it to me when my babies was 2lbs and over not under.I think you should take their advice and call the emergency vet just to make sure.Good luck and keep us posted |
i had this happen to Rosi, and she was having the dryheaves, she was salvating teeth clenched, shivering...trying to poop but couldn as poop was stuck to her butt and crying, scared the heck out of me, switched her to many times with diffrent dogfoods had to take her to the emergency clinic at 2am where they had to shave her butt and clean her out and hydrade her, i felt soo bad... next day she had a very raw butt , had to give her 1/4 of a baby asprin forced vaseline in her mouth and used preperation h on her butt , then used the towelettes for a few days, that was a lesson i wont forget, i felt like such a bad mommy, thanks to Kimberly's help i learned alot...please call the vet ! Rosi was fine couple days later, and she got a new nickname :Barebutt ;) as i make shure groomer keeps it that way ! |
Thanks for all your help and support! He finally made a little poopy, walked around a little, and licked Nutrical on his own. This morning he seems a little thin, but he ate breakfast and pottied and is back asleep. Everything is always better in the morning. Now I have all day to keep an eye on things. I think I will be keeping a closer eye on their bottoms. |
