My first yorkie...got lots of questions! I have wanted a yorkie for almost a year now and my boyfriend got me one for Christmas and I love her so much!! I can't believe how attached I've have gotten to her in less than a week. I've done alot of reading about yorkies but I was hoping to get some advice from others. First is there any suggestions on potty training?? Second she likes to CHEW and she has sharp teeth. How can I break her of not chewing on fingers and toes? I know from reading that yelling and spanking (which I would never do) don't help...any advice?? Basiclly I would just like a few helpful hints if anyone is willing. OH and I need a name. I know it sounds crazy that I haven't named her, but I can't find the right one. I wan't a unique and original name that fits her. |

Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations, kp! You are in for a real treat ... these are the sweetest babies and also very intelligent. We studied all the books and read everything we could find before we found our Toto. One rule we have is NO yelling and anyone that would ever spank our baby would surely die! :) None of that is necessary .... they will quickly learn a bzillion one or two word commands ... the first word we taught Toto was "no". When she would nip us with those little needle teeth, we would tell her no and hand her something of her own to chew on [make sure you have a variety of chew toys]. We began training her to the wee wee pad on the way home the very day we bought her! Yep! Stopped the car along the side of the road ... put the pad down and sat her right on it immediately after she peed in my lap in the car! Didn't take her long to get the hang of it! We have loads of knowledgeable people here who are eager to help ... just ask away! Tell us all about your baby ... age ... weight, etc.? Glad you are here! ;) |
Potty Training When I first got her it was really cold outside so I used puppy pads, which to my surprise she used 75% of the time. Now that it is warming up I've been taking her outside, but so far she hasn't went outside. When she poops it is always on the pad but lately she hasn't been using them to tee-tee. I loved the websites for names, especially the 2 that gives an explanation of the name. Thanks for the info. If anyone else has anything they would like to add I am willing to try it!! |
Info on my precious lil gir My lil girl is 9 weeks old and has been with me a week tomorrow. She weighs about 2.5 lbs. My boyfriend who knew nothing about yorkies did a great job of picking her out. Her mom weighs 3.5lbs and the dad weighs 5lbs. Any guessing on how much she'll will weigh as an adult? She loves to play and loves to drag her toys out everywhere. I have 2 other dogs and one is old and somewhat of a grump and doesn't like puppies so i keep a baby gate up in the hallway so there are no close calls. (I am very protective of her) But at night when the grouch is asleep I let her have the run of the house. She is truly the love of my life. I can't belive how attached I've gotten. Tuesday was my first day back at work after the holidays and when I lefted she cried and so did I :) but it is getting better, actually today she didn't cry at all. The only problem I'm having (which isn't a big problem) is the biting. She doesn't quite understand the meaning of "no" but I know as long as I'm consistant and use your helpful hints she'll learn. Thank you for making me feel so welcome. It's great to have people to talk to about her since that's all I talk about now!! |
Same as Me I have a new Yorkie too, his name is Eddie and he is 10 weeks old and we have had him for 2 weeks now. He nips and bites too, all puppies do that but just always have a toy right there with you so you can replace your toes, nose, fingers, pantlegs, with the toy, eventually she will stop. Good Luck with your new girl and post pics when you can...................Teigan |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! Isn't it just amazing how attached we become to these little guys! I've had lots of dogs, but I never was as attached to them as I am to Higgins, our little one year old! (He was one on 12/28 and I don't know where that time went......) Be sure to buy her LOTS of toys! I mean, really LOTS of toys to keep her little teeth busy so she won't chew you or your stuff. You can make toys, too.....tie an old soft cotton sock in a big knot to play tugsock with her. Put a tiny treat in an open plastic water bottle and watch her try to get it out....you can even put a little peanut butter inside the opening....... When she play-bites your fingers, firmly tell her "no biting, just kisses" and lift her up to your face and cuddle/kiss her, or give her a toy. Be very consistent, and she'll get it. Same with the potty training. Be consistent. Potty training will usually take many months, so just accept it and keep on trying. Can't wait to hear what you name her....... |
size Welcome...your pup is over 2 pounds at 9 weeks..so he might have been just at 2 pounds at 8 weeks..if you triple the weight, he will be in the 6 pound range, prehaps a touch more..a better estimate is to double the 12 week weight. I am not doubting the size of the dam, but as a long time breeder who has stud service available..I can not count the people who call and said they 3 female to breed...I do not breed a tiny bitch..so out comes the scales because it was so obvious the female was more in the 5 to 6 pound range. |
biting and chewing PS...use Bitter Apple on anything you do not want them to chew..I have put it on my fingers and they stop and spit!!..remember to wash your hands it tastes just like a green apple. |
