yorkies and kids? How many of you have yorkies and kids? How fragile are yorkies? I was just curious. I definately plan on waiting much longer until I get any dog, I was just curious. |
I don't have kids but I used to have a daycare in my home (well, for a long time I actually only had 3 kids here). At the time I didn't have my female Yorkie who is much smaller than my male, but I DID have my male here when I had my in-home daycare, and he is 4 lbs - he was perfectly fine around the kids. I would personally suggest that you get a "sturdier" Yorkie (one that isn't so fragile) if you have kids. One that is AT LEAST 4 lbs. Maybe even 5 or 6 lbs (or bigger if you want), however I know there are many here who have kids with 4 lb Yorkies and they are just fine. Then again, I know there are several people here that have kids with even smaller Yorkies (smaller than 4 lbs I mean) and they are fine too. The smaller Yorkies (3 lbs and under) ARE more fragile and you do have to take extra precautions as not to step on them, or let them jump off of things, etc. You have to make sure to explain to your kids that even though Yorkies are small, they are NOT toys and can not be treated like one. As long as you watch them (kids and Yorkies both) and make sure the kids understand how to "handle" the Yorkie, then everything should be ok. But again, just to be on the safe side, I would recommend a Yorkie that is at least 4 lbs - especially if you are going to be constantly nervous about the Yorkie possibly getting hurt by the children. Of course, there is never any guarantee about what size a Yorkie is going to be full grown, but the breeder will usually have a pretty good idea ;) Good luck in choosing your new pup whenever you decide to! :) |
I have 3 boys.. I was so scared when I got my first Yorkie mix. He was so tiny. After a while the kids learned to be careful around him. It's new to kids to have something so small that isn't a real toy. I now have a new yorkie baby and they are really careful and watchful around him.. They can live together with supervision..:D |
