Great thread Dianne. It might be a good one for a poll. I have babies but I have heard of them living into their 20s! |
I had a little girl for 15 years....she mellowed as she got older...she became slower and couldn't jump as high....her eyes were fine....but, her hearing went and I know she was completely deaf.....So, with my new yorkie....I clean his ears with witch hazel and a q-tip to prevent him from losing his hearing....I only feed him hard crunchy food to give him strong healthy teeth that will last a lifetime....My 15 yr. old developed congestive heart failure....they said I could keep her alive with medication....but, I couldn't stand to see her suffer....It killed me, but I put her down....I know yorkies live to be 15-17...but, i heard the first thing to go is their hearing....no pun intended |
I haven't had mine very long either, but I can tell you that a lot of them calm down around 2 years old...not too much...but I do consider it a nice transformation. I LOVE being able to cuddle Tea Leaf like a little baby now that she holds still long enough!!! I sure wish those little puppies with all of that energy could use even 5% of it to clean the house....it would be spotless! |

Cushings PRA, cataracts, Glaucoma Diabetes Obesity Tooth and gum decay Deafness Trachea collapse Kidney faliure I agree that the biggest change in behavior is that they tend to mellow out, sleep more, bark less. I also find that as they get older, their dependence on you actually creates a stronger and deeper bond. When they leave you, your heart goes with them. :unlove:  :lovewings |
I have babies too, but my friend's neighbor has a Yorkie thats 19.... she moves very slow, but she is still the queen B at her house! |
15 My first yorkie was almost 15 when I lost him. I did not notice much difference in him physically from age 2 until he died. No health issues, a little slower, not as big an appetite, liked to sleep a bit more. He died quietly in his sleep and I thought that I would die, he was my baby for ten years, I got him as a rescue when he was four. |
